Car rental ?'s

We are planning to rent a car when we go in Oct. and will be picking it up at the airport. My question is this. The website says you need a major credit card to rent, but you can pay for it with debit card, cash, etc. so do they charge your credit card and then refund it? Or do they check to see if you have a certain credit limit(if so what does the limit have to be)? We would really like to not use any credit cards on the trip, but if they're gonna charge it on one then I guess we have to. Anyone know how it works. I think the company is Avis. TIA
