Car Rental Question

Now that National Car Rental is closing up in Cocoa Beach I wonder what car rental place to use. We chose National because we only wanted the car on our last day staying at WDW then it's on to the port the next. We are able to pick up a car onsite at WDW. Yes its a bit of a hassel needing a taxi from the drop of site to the port, but it still worked out cheeper than other options.

We have used AVIS in the past. I have read here that there is a drop off fee for a one way rental to the port. Is that still true? I made a ressie online with Avis and there was not any drop off fee listed in the "pages":teeth: of extra charges. Will they spring this on me when I go to drop it off - or is their quote good since they already know where I am leaving the car?

BTW if you are a member of Costco, check out the Costco Travel site and check out the discount codes for the car rental places - I saved a lot on this rental ressie by using the code.

Thanks.

As far as I am aware, Thrifty/Dollar is the only agency with a drop off fee.

The drop-off fee will be listed with your taxes and charges.
The drop-off fees are sometimes applied, and then other times they are not (even with Thrifty/Dollar). I have seen them with other companies as well in the past year, but not as prevalent as with Thrifty/Dollar.
What happened to the good old days -no drop-off fees in Florida?:confused3

The only other places I know of at the Port are Budget and Hertz. Budget has a place at one of the Downtown Disney Hotels, but the last time I used it, it was a one man operation. I could not get a ride back to my hotel. I'm not sure where Hertz place is near property.

I'm going with Avis early December, but I'm going the opposite way. One way rental from the Port to WDW.

what if I wanted to rent a car from WDW to the Port and then a week later from the Port to the Airport - what is the best option?

Budget, Avis and Hertz all have WDW locations and port-area offices with free shuttles to/from the terminal. Budget (Doubletree) and Avis (Hilton) are both located in the DOwntown Disney hotel plaza. Herta is at Shades of Green. I have always gotten great rates with Budget and Avis...Hertz is always the most expensive choice.

Budget and Avis will pick you up at your hotel and take you back to their office to complete the rental process. I'm not sure about Hertz. Or, you can take the bus to Downtown Disney and walk or take a cab right to the location.

Price out a one-way rental each way. Use Cape Canaveral for your city near the port.
If you will be staying at a Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach hotel, also price out a weekly rental, as most hotels will allow you to park for free while you are cruising. To park at the port, it will cost an additional $15/day ($105).
Our next cruise, it is going to be cheaper to keep the car a week and park it in a lot, verus the one-way drop-off we have always done in the past.
