Hello everyone. I will be renting a car from national shortly and I'm confused about what kind of insurance I should/need to get. When I've rented cars in the past, I've always waived any kind of insurance, assuming that my credit card would cover everything. :headache:

I've recently learned that this isn't the case, so I was hoping you all could tell me what you typically do when you rent a car. My credit card says to just waive the collision insurance. But there are 5 other options I can choose from:

National Protection Plus ($27.45/Day)
Carefree Personal Protection ($7.99/Day)
Personal Accident Insurance/persone ($5.99/Day)
Roadside Plus ($4.99/Day)
Supplemental Liability Insurance ($14.95/Day)

Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it :goodvibes

Also call your auto insurance company and ask them what coverage you get for rental cars on your policy. For us, we're covered the same in a rental car as we are in our own car. That should give you both collision and liability. Not all policies work that way, though.

Don't see a home town on your profile, but I'm assuming you're from the U.S. One caution on relying on your credit card is that the coverage doesn't always apply when you're overseas. (My parents found that out the hard way when they had an accident in Spain.)

I've always declined the insurance too.

My car insurance company said that I'm covered for a rental car, but the one thing I wasn't covered for was if I have an accident in a rental car, even though my insurance would cover the cost of damages, I could still be liable for a daily charge of the rental car for being out of commission. I'm not really sure what that daily charge amount is, but if the car is out of commission for a lengthy time, the cost could add up very quickly.

So now I'm not sure if I should continue to decline or if I should pay for that extra insurance through the rental car company.

Between my car insurance and my credit card, I am more than covered and what little risk remains, I'm willing to retain as the statistical risk of getting into an accident on vacation is not significantly higher than at home.

Thanks for your replies! I'm in the US and will be renting in the US. Only issue is I don't have a car so I don't have car insurance...
