Has anyone rented a car in Nassau (preferably at the Port) to explore the island on their own? We are going to be a group of 8, and we are not interested in paying the $1200 excursion fee for a private driver and vehicle! We would prefer to just rent a car and drive ourselves!

Thanks for your help!

I haven't, but I also wouldn't. I wouldn't even do the private excursion through DCL.

To be fair, I've been to Nassau several times since 1980. Maybe the fact that I've been there, done that is a factor in my advice. Perhaps others will give you a more positive response.

If you go to the Department of State website and read about the crime situation in Nassau, you can better make an informed decision, though. There is a good section on Transportation safety.

Thanks for your reply! We have a little different motive for exploring the island. We actually are a State Department family, and starting in the summer we will be living in Nassau for 3 years! We are going to use our time in port to scope out our possible living arrangements, and our kids school. We've "been there, done that" with the touristy stuff as well!

Thanks, I did see that Avis has a counter at the port. Always looking for new and possibly better options!

Yes, we typically rent cars and/or a driver when we hit ports and love exploring on our own. I think we used Avis since it was convenient to the port and had no issues driving around the island or with any of the locals. In fact, many of the locals were friendly and informative once you got out of the port area!

That's great news! Thanks!

I have met many locals in the port area of Nassau that are friendly and informative.

I mentioned 'out of the port area' because some of the locals in the port area can be pushy trying to sell stuff which does not bother my family as we travel a lot and are used to that... but I can understand why others on this forum would be uncomfortable with that.
