Hi....

We are planning on renting a car on Grand Cayman, and are wondering which companies anyone had good experiences with, and which location is best to pick up based on the fact that we are coming via Cruise Ship? Thaanks for the help..

We don't leave until October, but I already booked a Jeep for our excursion with Grand Cayman Cruise Excursions. I think the web site is www.grandcaymancruiseexcursions.com. I'm pretty sure they are rentals from Avis and they pick you up by the dock and drive you to the rental agency (about four minutes away). I would love to heard what you thought of the rental (is it worth it).

Have fun!!:)

We rented a car in Grand Cayman on a recent vacation there. Granted, we were not on a cruise, but I KNOW there are lots of taxis when you get off the ship. Just take one to the car rental place outside of the airport (less than 5 minutes away). We rented from a local place without a hitch. We LOVED traveling the island on our own!!!! Be careful! they drive on the 'wrong' side and it takes some getting used to! We visited the botanical gardens, Rum Point, and the turtle farm all on our own. I must say, however, if you like to snorkel and you've never snorkeled in the carribean, then I would spend your visit doing an all-day "Captain Marvin's" stingray city tour. The fish are fabulously beautiful down there. We had snorkeled in Miami and on Castaway Cay but there's nothing that can compare with the coral reefs in Grand Cayman. Well, JMHO!

I know this if off the subject -- but since it was brought up in this thread -- I have a question I have been hesitant to ask because I feel like a dumbbell that I don't know this. I don't understand snorkeling. I've never done it. From the pictures I see, you swim underwater with the snorkel in your mouth? How does the water not come in the top? Also, if you rent snorkeling equipment on these excursions or at CC, how clean is it? Do they disinfect it from the last renters?

Sounds odd I know, but this is one of those things I've never done and always wondered about!

Snorkeling is VERY easy and a bunch of fun. In salt water, your body floats (you also wear a small life vest). You also wear a mask that fits over your eyes and nose. Finally, you have a tibe that fits between your lips and your gums. You float on the surface and have your face in the water. The tube sticks out and you breathe in and out of your mouth. You also wear fins on your feet so you can easily 'kick' places. You can rent the equipment and they keep it clean by rinsing it with a mixture of bleach and water. On CC, there is a "trail" where you swim from bouy to bouy and they have sunken hiding places for the fish to swim in and out of. Did that answer some of your questions??

I agree with jwann;

It is easy and extremely FUN. Once you try it you will want to snorkel everywhere you go... and by the way thanks to all about the rental car..

Make sure to check with your car insurance company about coverage in Grand Cayman. I know that most companies don't insure rentals in Cozumel (and all of Mexico for that matter). Not sure about Caymans. Better to ask than something go wrong and not have it available.
