car hire without credit card

does anybody know if it is possible to rent a car with a debit card instead of credit card? the alamo website says debit cards can be used with proof of return ticket but we only have email confirmation. has anybody managed to rent with a debit card before?

we always get a hire car without a credit card, we book with us rentacar and have dollar and when they ask we say we dont have one, we go for the platinum insurance so we dont have to pay anything there

thanks thats a great help! do you know if its only dollar who are flexible with the credit cards? ideally we wanted to use alamo and pick up from the car care centre. uts a nightmare my bf is struggling to get a credit card just because his mum forgot to put him on the electoral register!

lol you answered my question as i was writing it! thank you so much thats one less thing to worry about now! is it better to book over the phone with debit or is it still ok to do it online? sorry about all the questions its my first time trying to sort it all out

argh i just phoned usrentacar and they said the only company that will accept debit is dollar with a $250 a week deposit. we're having no luck with this car!

we dont leave any card so why do you need to?? if you have prepaid for all the insurances then they shouldnt need a card??

nope us neither... we booked it all online, then when we arrived all we paid was fuel... something like $40.
have done that last 3 years with no problems whatsoever.
