Car hire dilemma

We have a holiday booked 1 - 22nd December with VH. We have the usual free economy car booked with no insurance, now do we wait till we get to the airport and upgrade on the virgin free car or book the catagory car we want with virgin or just book direct with dollar?(have the annual car insurance policy)

The only dilemma I can see is who to go with except Virgin.
You will definitely get the whole package cheaper going elsewhere, and I would not recommend planning to pay for an upgrade when you arrive as this will probably work out more expensive than selecting a different class in advance.

usrentacar.com and uscarhire.co.uk get regular recommendations on here but shop around.

As JR says its who to use away from Virgin. Unless you get a deal none of us can get Virgin is the most expensive.
Never upgrade at airport, you are tired and they know how to manipulate you into taking things you don't need. They don't stand a chance with me but many end up paying OTT.
Look at the 2 above plus www.airlinenetwork.co.uk or www.floridacarhire.com plus any other you can find.
Also look direct with dollar.co.uk or dollar.com but usually cheaper thru one of the agents above.
We always upgrade to platinum or some call it gold, 21 nights rental should add about £40 to your booking but gives you a tank of gas(return empty) and extra drivers. Would cost you lots more paid locally.
