I usually book directly with Alamo or National, but the prices are a little crazy. I have found a few 3rd party sites who appear to be much cheaper and include insurances. I am a little hesitant to pay up front.

Marvel has used them maybe send him a PM. We are using www.uscarhire.co.uk you pick National Alamo or Dollar with them and all insurances are included I wanted to be guaranteed National so that who i went with even with the conversion from pounds it still worked out the cheapest.

ALso check out carrental8, it is another all inclusive rates site. BUt you have to pay upfront. I bit the bullet and booked our van in LA through them in the end.

Cool, will check them out too. I was going to say that I would see how you went, but we will be there at the same time. It is the paying up front that freaks me out a little.

I haven't used them but am thinking about it. carhire3000 are owned by Priceline and they have an Australian arm called Traveljigsaw - all the same in terms of cost, website, inclusions etc. At least with an Australian outlet you could check them out. I haven't yet but am planning to.
just ran a quote comparison between traveljigsaw, carrental8 and uscarhireuk. carrental8 and TJS are the same price and are $5 per day cheaper than uscarhireuk.
Edit: probably useful to add: economy car, 10 days, oct/nov, Alamo

We booked through Traveljigsaw. I have read lots of good feedback about them on trip advisor. We did have to pay upfront. I'll let you know how we go, we leave in 10 days! :cheer2:

Wow Mum from Oz, your trip has come around quickly. I would love to know how you go with Travel Jigsaw.

Have done a few quotes. Carhire3000 is $276, usacarhire.uk $315 and TravelJigsaw $370. CarRental8 reviews on Trip Advisor are mixed so will avoid them.

We usually use Alamo. Our hire is for 5 days, which makes it a weekly hire at $540. Silly thing is, if we rent the car for 1 day it is $60, then we could take it back and do another rental for 4 days at $245, so the total of doing 2 rentals would be $305.

Hi Jade,

I have used carhire3000 4 times so far without any issues. I am using them again this year, I have been unable to find anyone that can beat their price. They answer any queries very quickly via email, and even when i bumped our car last time, it was no problem the insurance covered the whole thing.

One tip, get a quote on the website and chose to email the quote to yourself, after a week or so you may get offerred a discount on your quote to try and get you to make your booking. Our quote went down by 30 pounds just because we hadn't confirmed it.

They use alamo, national and dollar. And if you want one of these in particular they can usually confirm the company for you if there is a car available, so you can be sure of which company you get. I have had alamo mostly and dollar last time, and no problems with either.

Thanks for the info Marvel.

We have 4 car rentals this trip. I would prefer Alamo, as their depot at LAX is much more accessible than National. Last time we used National, it took 3 trips in the tiny elevator to get all our luggage and kids upstairs to their depot.

Off to get some quotes emailed to me...

Thanks Sugarglider. That Michael certainly knows his all the tricks!

I have done my quotes at carhire3000, so now waiting to see if they offer it any cheaper. I am more than happy with the quotes we have received. We have 3 kids, all in car seats, so unfortunately we are stuck with minivan's which DH hates with a passion. It was hard enough buying a car here that would take 3 car seats across the back, let alone trying to rent one.

how are you getting these quotes ?

im on the 3000 one and i can make a booking in which they want payment straight away

but cant find anyway to send myself a quote

Click on 'save quote', fill in the drivers details, then hit 'email quote'.

im reading the reviews for carrental8 and i cant seem to find any good ones :scared1:

so i dont think we will use them (google carrental8 reviews)

looks like car rental 3000 or priceline

does anyone think we will need a gps to get from lax to las vegas ? or is it reasonably simple, not forgeting we have the iphone google maps as a last resort :thumbsup2

Watching this space carefully.

We have made a booking with carrental8. The rental was with dollar. We checked with dollar and they confirmed our reservation. However, it turned out that dollar coudln't provide the 8 PAX minivan that we wanted so carrental8 contacted us to offer us alternatives. We were also given the option of cancelling without charge. Been friendly and helpful and quick thus far.

Prices still the cheapest. My problem is lack of availability of the bigger vans. The current offer is with Alamo but is more expensive than a small independent we found. So pondering now about what to do.

You will be ok once you get on the freeway. It was a bit tricky finding our hotel in Las Vegas. We could see it but could not get to it! What I did was print the driving directions from Google Maps before we left home, but that was way before iphone's.

Shushh, I hope you have a positive experience with carrental8. Your options are really limited when there are no vans available.

did everyone else get this email ?

You previously requested a quote for a car rental in Los Angeles Airport. We have not heard from you and will be canceling this quote due to currency fluctuations and increases in prices. Typically as a car rental date nears, rates increase. At this point your quote is still valid. In order to secure this low price you must convert your quote to a firm reservation quickly by submitting to the quote initially sent to you or by contacting me directly by replying to this email or calling toll free in the US at 1-888-827-5931.

its not my experience that rates increase as the date nears
the opposite in fact

:surfweb:

No emails here!

I have bookings with Alamo. One has gone up over $200 since I made the reservation back in December. The other one is still the same. I wish I had made my LAX bookings at the same time.

but with september being their value period due to decreased tourist numbers their should be plenty of hire cars that they want hired out

i think we are going to go with priceline or carhire3000 just because i can trust them :thumbsup2
