Captain EO?

lol mesaboy . . . . well, it is corny . .. but for some reason, I still enjoy watching it. DS8 HAD to have a captain EO T shirt . . . . more impressive, at least I think, DD 17 had to have one too, and both her, and her friend, also 17, were hooked on the show, they loved it. Go figure lol.

Can anyone elaborate, what IS Capt EO? I know its Michael Jackson something but its a place we avoided on the one trip it was around. I thought it had closed for good until I booked ds the Yes program and EO is part of it. Poor hubby, he has no idea and I feel bad telling him now he must sit through it :crazy2:(definitly NOT a fan of MJ as a musican or person.) I have seen Honey I shrunk... would have skipped it if it was open

Its a 3D feature with Michael as the captain of a space ship piloted by rag tag crew of creatures that is sent on a mission to bring joy to a world with no music. If you don't like MJ's music, this is a must miss. OTOH, if you did like his music its a pretty amusing piece.

This was only a sign it's leaving.

Or that they're possibly bringing out new merchandise. Haters gonna hate.
I actually wrote a 17 page paper about Captain EO for one of my college courses this past semester (by the way, the professor loved it and I got an A, so deal with that), and one of the things I analyzed was the way people react to the fact that it was brought back versus public response to its initial release. This forum is actually part of what inspired me to include that section in the paper; I have never seen such strong hate for Captain EO anywhere but here, and it's all just because of the fact that MJ is in it. (I've seen a lot of people make the excuse that it's old, but those tend to be the same people who lament the loss of the Snow White ride and the lack of attention to Carousel of Progress. That's kind of telling to me...) Sad.

The Captain EO movie is highly cheesy, which is OK at times, however the 3-D is horrible, like so bad it bothers your eyes.Is this how it was back then or is it like this now because of it's age or what. Please Disney remove this ASAP as well as HISTA.

A dated early-technology 3D movie set in space where the power of music saves the day. Sounded corny as I wrote it.

He's actually being kind, lol.

The whole thing is extremely boring while Michael ("the infamous Captain EO"...the infamy is alluded to, but never explained) and muppet wannabes are on the spaceship and wandering around...which takes forever.

The Big Blue Hologram Head has told them they must give "The Gift" to the "Supreme Leader", so they set out to do this, but are boringly, ridiculously and nefariously thwarted at every turn.

Then Michael, in skin-tight white leather, sings and dances to change the evil Metal Medusa Supreme Leader Woman thing back into the loving, Glinda the Good Witch Woman thing. She has received The Gift. If you remember the Michael Jackson videos, this scene will look familiar.

Then it ends and you are paroled.

So....I guess Im the only one that sees the irony....

  • You have an self-destructive entertainer worthy of a side show in a carnival. "Meet Plastic Surgery Addiction Man!" watch him change features faster than Mr Potato head!.
  • You have a guy that died from abusing pain killers
  • You have a guy that abused small children.

Seems a bit hypocritical for Disney to do stuff like no alcohol sales and other things to promote a family values, yet run EO? You can't get Song of the South because of the race controversy, but step right up and see Mr Pedophilia.

Good thing OJ didn't make anything in 3d. Maybe we can get a someone with better character like Mel Gibson, the anti-semite, to make the next film...

Disney has essentially unlimited resources to produce a film, or find one of 100s if not 1000s in their vaults. Why EO is just an amazing decision to me. There's two possibilities: Disney execs are incredibly lazy and took the easy way out, or they are just cheap as hell (maybe both).

I'm honestly not trying to troll or stir up controversy. Just seeing if anyone else sees what I see. Everyone has their one attraction they can't stand, this one is mine.

I'm leaving for the parks next Friday. Hoping that EO is gone-O by then. Either way I will have a lot of fun.

Certainly his life was tragic, but I don't believe it was ever proven that he sexually abused any child. And his own children appear to have loved him dearly, despite the over-protective way he raised them.

And he was a big part of many of our childhoods, those of us who grew up in the Eighties. His music had/has a lasting impact on us. What's Halloween without Thriller?

I thought the movie was a blast, even (or especially!) the really dorky bits. I saw it first, then dragged my husband out to see it a few days later. And then when we came back with the kids, we made them see it. We told them it was part of their "cultural education". We gave them the background to Michael's story - the childhood abuse, the exploitation, the prescription drug addictions, the accusations of pedophilia... it really makes some of the songs he wrote especially tragic. "I'm Gonna Make A Change/ For Once In My Life/ It's Gonna Feel Real Good/ Gonna Make A Difference/ Gonna Make It Right . . ." Good luck with that, buddy.

And it's true, we all had fun mocking Michael's, um... lack of leadership style and his breathy voice. And the terrible Muppets in space. And the weird Supreme Leader, whose costume designer must have gone on to invent the Borg. But my teenage son (who is seriously into music) still bought himself a rainbow t-shirt.

And several days later, at Magic Kingdom, a CM actually left the parade to point at my son and shout, "Michael!" because he was wearing the shirt. :hippie:

Yeah, the beginning part is hokey and the acting stiff, but once the music starts I still feel the magic.

Somebody's missing my point. I don't care if he was convicted or not. Why in the world would they anywhere near someone who was even accused? I'm not saying its fair (innocent until proven guilty), just saying that he's a *very* tarnished brand. Billions of other choices out there. Very analogous to Mel Gibson -- would you hire him to pitch your product right now?

The drug abuse is NOT subjective. Lots of hard facts to back that up, including the autopsy.

Again, not trying to rob people of their childhood. If you stopped history in the eighties, there's no issue. Keeping in mind that's not possible, I'm just trying to understand why Disney would think this is a good idea.

When you say, "You have a guy that abused small children," you are stating that as fact. Which it is not. I try not to be deliberately unfair.

As for Mel Gibson, he is alive. Mel's rants are on record, and he'll probably have more to share with us down the road. When Mel dies, I am sure we'll get all nostalgic about his Mad Max and Lethal Weapon days. But until then, there's no comparison.

Michael Jackson would never have been invited to be a spokesperson at Disney during his final awful days, either. But he's dead now, and that does change things. It allows us a perspective than encompasses his entire life, instead of just the tragic end. Much in the same way President Reagan's image has been rehabilitated, beyond being just the incompetent, confused old man he was during his final year of office.

Feeling nostalgia for something or someone does not mean you've "stopped history". And Disney's all about nostalgia.

I hope they put it out of MY misery!

Seriously, who is forcing you to see it? That's something else I really don't get about the Captain EO discussions that come up here. If you really hate MJ that much, then don't freaking see the movie! Not difficult. It's not even right up in your face when you get into Future World; you have to go a bit out of the main path to get to it.
I really don't understand the hate here. Look on pretty much any other Disney discussion site: most people either like Captain EO or they just leave it alone. The only reason people here slam it so much is because they hate MJ, as clearly demonstrated by jthelman's posts.
I'm headed to Disneyland in about a week, and I fully intend to see EO as many times as I have time for while I'm there, in addition to buying any merchandise they may sell that I don't already have. I'm a long-time EO fan and collector. Deal with that, haters.

.

You do understand that MJ was arrested and went to trial - right? At best he had questionable judgement when it came to kids. This point can't be argued.

Try this as a litmus test: would you have let him anywhere near your kids?

You still never answered why Disney wouldn't just pick someone else (anyone else) rather than MJ.

Can anyone confirm that there are more people attending Captain EO than HISTA? My best is that the same number of crickets for either crappy film.

The dude is dead. May I suggest you let it go? :goodvibes

Got it.

No more debates about attractions anymore. All of them are great and no one is to dislike or question anything.

Sorry about the exercise, I will find a less indoctrinated place for discussion.
