Watched reruns last night and I thought the man was dying in front of us. I didnt realize he was that sick. Epi he suffered a broken rib that later he couldnt breathe was white shaky than spitting up blood all while still smoking. Went to ER still smoking outside before he went in. I thought Dr was gonna faint looking at the xray. Phil had a blood clot in leg that passed through the heart and settled into his lung if he didnt get there he probably would have died that night. Was very scared talking to his son his mom died from the condition. They showed his treatment I thought he was dying pumping in blood thinner he knew he was in grave shape. Very touching telling his son that his fishing days might be over. Phil didnt seem like a guy who took care of himself and can picture him not taking his meds and going back to the sea and eventually having the massive stroke that killed him. Fishing is there life and he probably died doing what he likes to do.

It just won't be the same without him. He seemed like a very gentle person even though he had a gruff exterior.

They did a "behind the scenes" show last year focusing on the camera men and other staff of the show, and capt. Phil kind of took one of the Discovery crew kids under his wing because the poor kid was sea sick. He was a young kid who really looked up to Phil. It was so touching because you could tell he got a kick out of the kid and teased him, but in a funny loving way.

Does anyone know when the new season starts?

OMG, I was watching it myself!!! I finally taped the last one because it was 1am in the morning. I did not watch it yet.

So he is not in the new season because he dies shortly thereafter?

Evidently he was okay through King crab season, but died during Opie season. So we'll get to see him for part of the Deadliest Catch season - which will, IMHO, be incredibly sad. I'm counting the days until the season starts, and yet dreading it at the same time.

Phil was, bar none, my favorite captain. There was just something about him....he was gruff, but he was also incredibly funny - it seemed to me he had a wicked @$$ sense of humor, and felt like you could sense his intelligence when he joked around. I'm really going to miss seeing him on the show, and I wonder how the series will fare after this year. None of the other captains they've tried to bring on have really captured my interest like the originals. :confused3

Hmm...this makes me wonder what happened to Rick and his wife...they were pretty cool and interesting. Anyone know the story of why they aren't on any more? Time to Google!

I can't watch any shows that have people who have died that are my peers...Deadliest Catch, Bernie Mac, John Ritter stuff....cannot do it.
