Capt.Jack Sparrow on the poc ride

Having just rode it for the first time ever last year, I think the ride is awesome just the way it is. I don't worry about what is "original" or not. I am just happy to be on holidays with my family. But that is just me, I realize others don't feel the same (originality or not) and that is fine. If we all felt the same about everything life could be pretty boring. :thumbsup2

I don't think that adding Jack in changed the ride significantly in any way. It's one of my favorites and I love Jack Sparrow/Johnny Depp so for me it's better in many ways. Yes, it is different but change isn't always bad.

I didn't notice that they changed the auction much but it had been many years between visits (prior to 06 I hadn't been to DL for about 7 years) so I don't know that I would know. Does that make sense? lol

Oh and the Davy Jones water screen is AFTER the drops, it's right after the treasure room and before the ship (where you will see and hear Barbossa demanding the surrender of Cap'n Jack Sparrow) and town scenes.

I think it is fine to change things, but unfortunately I am one of the few that was a great fan of POTC but not a fan of Pirates of the Caribean the movie. Don't get me wrong I liked Johnny Depp as an actor before he did Pirates, I just thought the character was too fem, and same when he did Willie Wonka I think they ruined that movie btw.
Do I hate the additions, so it kind of ruins the ride for me.

You are right about the Davy Jones water screen! I realized that right after I posted. I remembered that it is the skull and crossbones at the first drop, right? My friend is always clinging to my arm in fear at that moment, so it tends to distract me temporarily!

Yup, the skull and crossbones is before the first drop. :) For the longest time I had that quote on my MySpace page....LOL :lmao:

Quote? You mean, "Dead men tell no tales," or "the skull and crossbones is before the first drop"??!!:rotfl:

I know I have the hardest time finding the hidden Mickeys on POTC. My eagle-eyed friend spotted one in a very dark place that you have to strain your eyes to see, sort of at the beginning, before the first drop when you are sailing past the Blue Bayou and past the little cabin/shack, on the wall in the upper left area. I have never seen that one mentioned in any books or articles on Hidden Mickeys. And I don't know how my friend spotted it. And then she and another friend saw the one that is supposedly in the cloud formations during that battle scene where Barbossa is. And I seem to be looking in the wrong direction whenever Mickey appears in the clouds, so I think last time I was trying to spot it and I missed Barbossa!

I do like it! I didn't expect to, since I hate the HM overlay, but was quite pleasantly surprised to find the pirate changes to my liking

I LOVED the POTC ride ever since I first went on it as a kid.

I LOVED the POTC movies. All three were fantastic.

But seeing the movies and the ride combined? Not a fan. To me it feels like it kinda ruined the ride. Its still fun and great, but doesn't have the same feel and magic. And also it takes away the memories of the ride because now most young kids think the ride was built and put in because of the movies. Trust me, i was in line and some brat was going on about OH BECAUSE THEY HAD A MOVIE THEY HAD TO BUILD A RIDE HUH? ugh.

Yes it is kinda sad to know that there will be generations that don't understand that ride inspired the movies not the other way around...so it falls to us the older generations to teach them things like "Pirates was one of Walt Disney's original rides..."

I'm glad somebody brought this up. I really like the additions, but on my last visit (Sunday) something new caught my eye as we're on the uphill and Captain Jack is talking about keeping this small portion of the treasure. At the last visible moment I noticed what he's holding in his left hand.

A circular gold medallion with a red crystal in the middle. I only got a quick glimpse of it, but it looked a lot like the headpiece from the staff of Ra, found in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Next time I'll take a much better look, just to confirm this. I only saw it for a second or two, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that one of the imagineers added it. They did add the Aztec chest during the last makeover.

BTW: Does anyone know if the mule by the singing trio is on vacation or has been retired?

POTC has always been my favorite, and I was very leary of them changing it. VERY. But we love it now. Especially the Davy Jones part, very cool effect. We like seeing Jack as well. I really don't think it's taken away from the ride, I actually think it's made it better.

I have always loved POTC. I'm not sure how many gallons of water we splashed on each other as teens (shhh ... don't tell). I was so disappointed on my son's first visit back in '01 when it was closed for sprucing up.

I don't have a problem with them adding Jack Sparrow. To me, seeing the new animatronics is part of the Disney magic. I DO, however, think that it does show the age of the other characters in the ride. The two techonologies side by side makes the old ones look creaky. I'd love to see the same ride with all of the figures as animated as Jack!

Since it seems like most here are fans one way or another can you weight in on this question?
Wasn't there the original, then a rehab were things were supposed to be a little more PC (like the whole chasing scene-god forbid a woman would be chasing a man unless he was stealing her food), then the movie rehab that included switching over a few things that were not going over well with the first rehab? Were there others?
Hit me!
Plus I will be there in a few weeks and now I want to see what he has in his hand. Maybe I will try & get a picture. :upsidedow

Last month, the singing mule was fine, I hope that he still is. Perhaps he has gone on sabbatical? and will be returning soon.

LOL silly, this quote
"Psst! Avast there! It be too late to alter course, mateys... and there be plundering pirates lurking in every cove, waitin' to board. Sit closer together, and keep your ruddy hands inboard. That be the best way to repel boarders. And mark well me words, mateys... dead men tell no tales!"

"Ye come seekin' adventure and salty ol' pirates, aye? Sure ye come to the proper place. But keep a weather eye open, mates, and hold on tight, with both hands if you please... there be squalls ahead, and Davey Jones waiting for them what don't obey..."

I switched them off, I had the first one for a looong time and then the second one. There is a hidden Mickey in the wall of the town, look for it as you pass by on your next visit. Look for Barbossa once and then the Mickey in the wall on the next ride. :) You can't see them both (well you can but you gotta know where you're looking) on one ride because they are right next to each other.

I think the mule is on vacation because he was there a couple months ago.

Since it seems like most here are fans one way or another can you weight in on this question?

Yes, there was a rehab where they changed the chasing pirates. Because people were offended the women were running from pirates and pirates were running from women...hello, they are pirates, they plunder, it's not pretty.....lol

I too would like them to upgrade the other animatronics in the ride but I can only imagine how $$$ that would be. :)

Not sure how many of you know this or not but Ill tell you anyways. The Aztec Chest from the POTC movies is in the treasure room. And it is the exact prop used in the movies as well.

My favorite part of the ride is when the person comes on randomly and asks a seemingly benign series of questions which may or may not start an inflammatory debate amongst all the people in the boat. :lmao: popcorn::

In my personal opinion, I really wasn't pleased when I heard that there would be some changes to the Potc ride. So I went to dl two summers ago and rode the ride. To be honest, I like the original version of the ride better. I have nothing against Capt. Jack Sparrow or any the other elements added. I just prefer the other version I grew up with. Leave the classic rides alone.

I've only been to Disneyland three times in my life. Twice when I was under the age of 15 and once, well, yesterday and the week preceding (some 12 years after my previous visit). I personally don't understand how it really changes the ride. 98% of the ride remains unchanged, and adding in a few updates certainly doesn't ruin it in my opinion.

For me, I have a difficult time relating to those opposed to "changing walt's rides." Walt himself was clear that Disneyland would never be finished and that changes were important to maintain the magic and excitement. A relatively small update to capture the excitement of a massively popular movie series based on the concept of the ride itself seems like it's very much in line with the spirit of Disneyland to me.
