Are the DTD buses running pretty reguarly during the breakfast hours?

No they're not! My DH and I stayed at SSR in October and tried to catch a bus from DTD to the Poly for a breakfast adr at Kona Cafe. There are very few if any buses running to the resorts that early in the morning. We had to go back to SSR and catch a bus to MK and then monorail to the Poly.

My advice would be to take the bus to DHS from SSR and walk or take the Friendship boat to the Beach Club.

I agree with mcarthur205. I am a regular SSR guest and if you have a breakfast ADR its much better to catch a bus to the MK and monorail if its at one of those resorts. Bussing to Studios and taking the boat over to the Beach Club is your best bet to get to Cape May. You can also walk from Studios to Beach Club, it takes around 20 minutes and is a very pleasant walk. That will work up your appetite!

Or you can take a cab which from SSR would be around $10.

ok, not a character meal so not exactly what you were asking for but we loved Biergarten. It was one of the most fun places we went all week.
Also, the HDDR, again not characters, was very fun.

The best character interaction we experienced was at the Hollywood and Vine breakfast. We don't even watch the shows the characters were from (Little Einsteins, Jojo's Circus) but we had a great time. The characters were fun and we loved the breakfast food.
The Crystal Palace is great for characters as well.
And your boys might enjoy the princesses. The men in my family (dh and and those we showed pics too) particularly enjoyed Princess Jasmine, lol. Akershus in Norway is only 1 credit. Most people prefer breakfast as it's safer, but my dh dislikes eggs (which is the staple of a family style breakfast as WDW) so we did lunch. The food was excellent.

I voted for Chef Mickey's because it has the classic Disney characters, so besides Mickey you can also meet Minnie, Goofy, and Donald.
