My son just got a job in Canton, Mass :cool1:. However, we know nothing about the area. Can anyone recommed any nice areas to live? He would like to stay within a 45 min. drive. TIA :goodvibes

Canton's close by me...lots of decent towns close by to choose from. Milton, Dedham, Norwood, Stoughton are all right around Canton area, I'd say within 15 - 20 minutes depending where in Canton he needs to go to. He could a little go further out and look into Quincy, Braintree Weymouth. Does he have a family to consider or is it just him? Congrats to your son on his job!

cepmom, thanks for your reply. We are very excited. It is just him, 27 yo, so we don't have to worry about schools or anything like that. Any areas you would avoid? We're going this weekend to start looking for an apartment.

I would probably avoid Randolph, Milton's Lower Mills section, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Dorchester, although this is coming from a lifelong South Shore girl and mom! Lots of young single guys would be fine in some of those areas....they're just a little too urban for me

I live in Stoughton which is right next to Canton. Stoughton is a little cheaper than Canton. I would agree with PP and avoid Randolph and also Brockton. GL to him

Thanks so much. If anything he'll probably go further out, hopefully where the rents might be cheaper!

My husband is from Norwood and all his family is still there. It's next to Canton, I believe. It's a nice town, but I am not sure how the costs compare to other surrounding communities.

Dedham is fairly close to Canton and there is a brand new apartment complex that was just built there. It's right next to Legacy Place which has a Whole Foods, shopping, movies etc.

Disregard my comment on the commuter rail, I just remembered I was thinking of the wrong line.

Norwood is the town next to Canton, and Dedham comes after Norwood. There's lots of apartments in both towns, and both are safe places to live.

I live nearby also. He will have a lot of choices with a job in Canton. He could live in a more urban setting to one that is very much suburban. Its a nice location for a job with a lot choices to live that will give him a pretty easy commute.

Good luck and congrats!

I live in Newton, which is about a 20 min drive to Canton. Does he have an interest in being close to the city? If so Newton, Brighton, Watertown, Waltam are all pretty nice areas with for someone that ago to live. There is a lot of stuff to do and it is easy to get downtown. Costs maybe a little higher, but if he is open to it there are people always looking for roommates.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I have been at the computer all morning just researching. Right now he works for a temp agency and we have been waiting for this job to come through. We thought that was hard. I think finding a place to live will be harder! (but a nice problem after having him back home for the past 10 months )

Like a PP said I would avoid Brockton, Randolph, parts of Milton.

If he is young guy, you said 27, Quincy would be good I would think. It is central to both Canton & Boston. Also has a pretty good nightlife and lots of things to do.

Is there anything he is into that he wants to look for in a neighborhood?

I grew up in Boston & moved to South Shore a few years ago. Some areas are more family oriented and I would think boring for a young guy.

If he plans to go into Boston often, then Quincy is a good choice becasue there are a couple T stations there and a nice downtown. Stoughton is also nice. I lived there for 2 years.

By the way, tell him not to beleive everyone when they tell him that Town Spa pizza is the best.

Canton is already pretty far out of Boston. He might will likely find cheaper accommodations by looking further west. Anything north or east of Canton will likely be as or more expensive than Canton itself.

We rented in the Boston area 15 years ago and found it super expensive then. It looks like prices have gone up since then.

Thanks for all the info. My son and husband left last night with maps in hand to start the search :drive:. (I have to work )
