Can't Wear my New Earrings!

DH just gave me some earrings for my birthday. It's a set of three pairs of hoop earrings of varying sizes. I really like them and even pointed them out to him in a newspaper ad a few weeks ago. The problem is, the posts are huge! And they're not even round like most posts. They start out small and round and then further up they're kind of big and flat. I tried putting them on, but they just won't go through my ear. I almost got one through, but it hurt like heck and I didn't want to scrape my ear up. I really don't think I'll be able to wear them and I feel really bad! Anyone ever had this problem? Is there a secret to getting them on? I tried wiggling them and spinning them around but that didn't work. I guess I'll have to return them and pick out some that I can wear.

I bought a pair of Lois Hill earrings at Nordstrom once. They were wire hook style (not posts) but the wire was very thick. I did manage to get them in my ear but they were so uncomfortable I could not wear them. I did take them back and felt odd about it, but I did explain the problem and that I had inserted them in my ear. They were about $50 so I just didn't want to hang on to them.

I have a pair like that, and to make it worse, mine have diamonds on them, so not wearing them is terrible! I do not wear them often. I have worn them, and I have to shove them through, and it burns for quite a while. It eventually stops hurting and if I wear them a couple of days in a row, the second day is fine. But I rarely wear them, because it is painful to get them in. I dont get why they make them with posts like that. If I put a bunch of rubbing alchohol on the posts and on my ear right after they go in, it soothes them a little.

The itching/burning is what you feel when you put in earrings that are bigger than the ones you currently wear. Most earrings are 20 or 22 gauge (the bigger the number, the smaller the diameter of the post), and even going from a 22 to a 20, or 20 to 18, is enough to cause itchyness.

I can't speak for the OP but mine are similar to these, they are not round at all, they are actually flat...

Yikes. What an uncomfortable shape. Not sure if this would help, but whenever I put earrings in, I put a bit of bacitracin on the posts and they usually slide through my ears with no pain. And I don't get infections like I used to.

Can't imagine what the jewelry designer was thinking. Someone would have to have a "gash" in their earlobe in order to comfortably wear this style.

I am learning to be a silver smith and there is a big trend in the jewelry world to make distinctive "findings" clasps, ear wires etc. Some of them can be really off. It's a trend and a way to make things look handmade.

It's more of a big deal than you would realize and it sets a truly handmade piece apart because the findings that are made and not bought. This is not my rant....this is my industry, before anyone that buys their own ear wires jumps all over me.

I would take your earrings to a jewelry or someone that does jewelry repair. It should be a quick cheap fix to get you something you are more comfortable with.

I personally even know what that is like. I make hand made pieces with what I was describe as "gorgeous" findings. Can't wear my own stuff. There is something about the way I talk with my hands and shoulders that I just shuck standard french ear wires off and I have lost more handmade pieces than I would want to admit before I had to just give in and change for me what the ear wires looked like.

DH got me a pair of ruby studs a few years ago that match a ring he had gotten me previously. The posts are so thick! I can't wear them at all. I do need to have the posts fixed, because they really are pretty.

I recently bought a pair from Kohls that are post and they are so big I can't get them in.

We are having a late Christmas with my side this week and plan to give them to my niece maybe she can wear them

I didn't even realize it, but the earrings I am wearing today have those flat posts. They are small, though, so you don't even feel them in. I can see how they would be a royal pain if they were even just slightly larger.

I have a couple of gold posts that I dug out from way back when I first got my ears pierced (2nd grade). I tried putting them in but holy moly, the posts were so thick that it hurt like heck and I just couldn't bear to push them through. Apparently once upon a time I could actually put those things through my ears without incident, but my ear holes have probably gotten smaller over the years because most earrings aren't that thick.

My ears were pierced when I was 6 months old, so I've had them my entire life. Over the years, due to heavy earrings and tugging on hoops, my first holes (I added 2 more to each ear after I turned 18) have naturally stretched to about a 12 gauge. And I usually just wear captive bead rings in my 2nd and 3rd holes (16g and 18g), and then some light dangly ones on regular wire hooks. The CBRs stay in 24/7, but I don't usually wear ones in my first holes unless I'm going out or something.

I have ten holes in my ears and I've had them since I was 16. They are just normal sized piercings and I haven't done anything to them except wear studs or hoops. My lowest ones get the pretty earrings.

I can't imagine trying to put in starters now. OW!

I talked to DH about what to do since he was the one who gave me the earrings. We discussed having them looked at to see if the posts could be adjusted. He said he kept the receipt and would rather I take them back and pick out something I'm happy with. We're going to go to the mall tomorrow and see what we can find. I think I would rather do that than try to make them fit.
