I'm an adult and the railings come close to my shoulders. When people who have never cruised before ask if I feel safe or worry about falling overboard, I always say you'd have to be really trying to climb a railing to end up in the water. Of course there's 2 sides to any story and this article doesn't give a lot of information other than to say it happened, but I'm curious to know how it happened.

I have shuddered watching sail away sometimes where parents are either holding toddlers standing on the rail OR they have their kid on their shoulders and the parent's butt is against the rail. All it takes is one bump or slip of the hand. And you're NOT surviving from that far up.

The key is to make sure she is with someone any time she is on the veranda if you have one and lock that top lock whenever you're not using the veranda.

And NOT sit or stand her on the railing.

If this is the case, I would be 100% fine with them being banned. Or pay a heavy fine.
They are lucky to be alive.

We saw a dad with kid on his shoulders on top deck one pirate night and he sort of played like he was going to dip her over the edge. We told him to stop and notified ship safety officer. Seriously, you just don't "play" like that on a ship.

I will never forget being at the Top of the World Lounge years ago when they let as many people up as could fit on the viewing platform - and watching people sit their kids on the railing hanging over the 16th floor. The poor CM’s would have to come over and tell the adults that they weren’t allowed to basically dangle their kids over a wall where they would fall 16 floors if they slipped.

And it can be much worse on a ship underway, since you never know when you will get jolted by a rogue wave!

I was on the Dream, I think it was 2017, when a man fell or jumped overboard from deck 7ish. He was found in about an hour. I don't think they ever told what happened. It was during early dinner and half the ship didn't have a clue what had happened.

If that is true that is really stupid.

Reading the reddit thread it does look like the boat was moving. Life preservers were thrown over and they had to slow and turn around. They are lucky the water was calm and there was daylight.

Yeah - my BFF has a friend on board and they were going pretty slowly anyway.

Looking at Cruise Mapper, it looks like she's either heading in early or is going to hang close in case they need to do a helicopter evacuation. While they seem fine, I'm sure they both took in some water and that *can* lead to "dry land drowning". So I'm pretty sure they'll be in medical for observation until they get to the port - and probably handed off to an ambulance once there for more extensive checks.

A few years ago there was a situation on a Royal Caribbean ship where they were in port in San Juan and a child's grandfather sat her on a railing in front of one of the windows on the pool deck that can open. He claimed he didn't realize it was open - but I've been on their ships even before this and those windows have a tint. It did not end well.

Yes. There was a huge thread on that on the community board. Lots of people surmised there was much more to the story than what the poor grandfather said. In the end, he was responsible for the little girl falling - the video was crystal clear.

I feel so badly for that little girl. How truly traumatizing that could be for her, potentially. My prayers are with her. There will be much to be sorted out regarding the incident, but for now...blessings on her.

This seems like pure speculation. Doubtful that DCL is doing anything until they can investigate and do not see them wanting headlines that say "banned a child for falling overboard" until DCL is certain that the family is at fault. I could see DCL banning but not this fast. Right now the focus is likely on making sure the family is okay medically.

I remember that awful story! Does anyone know what ended up happening to this grandfather, was he found guilty and did he do any time? It was so so sad.

3 years of probation I believe. Parents kept trying to sue Royal over it and it kept getting tossed.
