I wonder how to pronounce Restaurant Akershus. Is it-

AKER- like, 'Cheeseheads are Green Bay PACKER fans.'
or
AKER- like, 'When I was in school, I got shoved in my LOCKER.'
and
SHUS- like, 'Does the Disney BUS go to Sea World?'
or
SHUS- like, 'Today, we're gonna make a chocolate MOOSE!'-the Swedish Chef
or
SHUS- like. 'Antonio Banderas did a good job as PUSS-in-Boots.'

Tell me what you think!

I'm in the "Locker Puss" school of pronunciation. LOL!

At first, I was calling it "AckerHouse"- then DUH! I noticed the 'sh' in the middle of ther word! I tend to favor PACKER PUSS, but that's probably way wrong. :teeth:

Just to make it even harder for you guys:

The word Akershus is actually two words put together. Aker is a name and hus is scandinavian for house. The s in the middle tells us that we are talking about Aker's house. That means that the correct way to part the sounds of the name in two is "Akers" and "hus".

Any good sugestions?

[ä'kurs-hOOs"]

Akershus , county (1995 pop. 434,544), 1,895 sq mi (4,908 sq km), SE Norway, bordering on the Oslofjord in the south and on Sweden in the east. The capital is Oslo. The county has productive farms and extensive forests, and tourism is important. Manufactures include processed food, textiles, metals, and forest products.

So Green Bay PACKERS MOOSE! :)

I asked a CM in the restaurant years ago how to pronounce it and she told me, "ACK-er-SOOS." Before that I had been calling it "AY-kers-HOUSE", but of course that was wrong!

Now I know... and knowing is half the battle!

I wonder how many of us have been wondering this exact thing, but never bothered to post to ask? I FINALLY know how it's pronounced. Thanks :earboy2:

I asked a CM once at Disney dining and she said it is pronounces "Ackers" "house". So that's what I call it now. I also tried to put the sh in, but that's actually where the word breaks up.

Sea Spray- thanks! I feel like my insomnia has done a service to us all- now we know the correct way to say "that restaurant at Norway".

donnajon- :rotfl2: I usually say this when I call for a PS- don't want to seem uncouth!

I say it like LOCKER-MOOSE.
This is the way the Cm on the phone told me its said. Ahh Care Seuss (like Dr. Seuss!) aka LOCKER MOOSE.

I always thought the A in Akershus was actually a letter that we do not have in the English alphabet - it is shown as an "A' with a little round circle over it. It is pronounced like a our long "O" sound so I have always said "Oaker-schuss".

I am not sure where I got the impression that it was spelled that way ... from the sign? I just can't remember specifica but I got the thought from somewhere ...

(Using my oh-so-expert year's experience in Norway to confuse people all over the Net, that's me!)

There seems to be as many ways to pronounce Akershus (I say Aaak'er-soos)as there is DIS! :flower:
There's the Diss family and then there is the Diz family!
Oh, and btw....I'm a D"iss"er because D.I.S. originally stood for Disney Information Station, and was not short for DISney.

Whew, I am glad that I am not losing my mind. Yes, the county and castle in Norway are properly spelled Åkershus, so my pronounciation of "Oaker-schuss" or "Oakers-hoos" should be correct. I also now remember a CM in Norway smilingly telling me I was one of few people who said it the right way.

Here's some more info, on the original, if you are interested: inhttp://uk.holidaysguide.yahoo.com/g-europe-norway-resorts_excursions.html

I have to go with Akers' House. My last name is Akers (as in 40 acres and a mule!). It's not as exotic as OckerZues, but I can't help it! :confused3

I was another who asked the cast members. The first one said "Ah-ker-shoes". Then, another sounded like she was saying it differently so I asked her how she pronounced it and she said "Ak (like it rymes with hawk) - her - seuss (like the writer Dr. Seuss)". I usually say it more like the first one.

1) My (now grown) daughter from her early years still calls it "More-gus-Board" for the eatery.
2) We know what she means.
