Can't go to Canada if you've had a DUI

I don't know who you spend your time with but I don't know anyone with a DUI. And I certainly don't know anyone who thinks it's a rite of passage. What a strange assumption.
Each year over a million people are arrested in the United States under charges of drunk driving and it is estimated to only be a small portion of the total number of alcohol impaired drivers.

That is millions of drivers every year who either see it as not a big deal or just don't care.

Okay, there are lots of people convicted of child abuse or a variety of other crimes and no one thinks they are a rite of passage or not a criminal offense. I just think that's a strange point of view. I can have my opinion that this is a strange take. I think DUIs are highly stigmatized now. But sure, you are entitled to your opinion and whatever is happening in your social circle.

How many of those million are a 2nd, 3rd, or more offense? And yea, saying "many see it as a right of passage" seemed strange to me too.

Alcohol related crimes and abuse for whatever reason are viewed by many as just not as bad as other crimes. That does appear to be changing but there are still plenty of people, millions in fact, that don’t seem to take alcohol related crimes as a serious matter.

Not long ago in the US we transitioned to having more daily users of cannabis than daily users of alcohol. Maybe we will soon see a decline in alcohol related crimes?

No idea.

But do you think a 2nd, 3rd, or more offender sees a DUI as a serious matter?

You're moving the goal posts. That's supposed to happen in the Controversial forum. 🤣

You brought up that over a million people are arrested each year for DUI. Sounds like a big number, I agree. But if people are getting repeatedly arrested, that number drops. And, considering there are 262M adults in the US, that 1M is only ~0.3% of the population.

Am I?

All I said was:
Too many in the US see a DUI as a right of passage. Everyone has one, right? So they don't even see it as a criminal offense.

And somehow that was interpreted as saying all people who get a DUI see it as a right of passage.

No, it was interpreted as saying many who get a DUI see it as a right of passage. I've never heard anyone even hint at that. Are there people who do think so? Maybe. But a handful. And if you want to say "one is too many", I can't argue with that. But I don't think there are many people now that think DUI is not a big deal. 20-30 years ago? Possibly.

The stats say that about 1/3 of all DUI convictions are repeat offenders. That is too many that apparently don’t see a DUI as a big deal or they would have stopped at one. Instead they are collecting them like prizes or badges.

Those are the people that will show up at a border, stunned that they have been denied.

Yes, there are people who don't care about DUI. But I still disagree that "Many see it as a right of passage".
