Can't get a room with my DVC points, but I can get one with cash??

Hi,
We decided in Oct 2006 to take a trip to Disney in
Jan 2007, We will be staying at the BWV using our DVC points we had planned to stop over in Hilton Head on the way down to break up the 20 hour drive as well as on the way back for the same reason. When I called DVC to make my reservation was told no studios or 1 bedrooms available so I was waitlisted We still have had no luck in getting our waitlist to come through
so I called Disney reservations and was told I could get either a studio or a 1 bedroom which ever I wanted for a cash reservation of course. If this is a DVC resort and I cannot get a ressie using my DVC points how come somebody walking off the street would have no problem? I'm sure there must be a logical reason

This is an often asked question here on the boards, many members,especially new members, find it odd that cash ressies ar available when point ressies are not.

There are a few reasons for this:

1) Remember that Disney retains a small portion of ownership in each resort for maintenance. If those rooms are not needed, they are rented for cash.

2) Member trades - If an owner trades to Disneyland or a regular WDW hotel, cruise, Adv. by Disney or other non-Interval International location, those points are given up to Disney for cash reservatons to offset the cost of those trades. It is the availability of cash rooms that allows for those trades.

3) Any rooms not reserved by members with points are released to Dosney for cash reservations at the 60 day mark. Income from that shows up on our budgets as Breakage income, and helps offset our dues.

I booked in November, though, and before I could make my reservation with DVC, I could book it online for cash. Why is that?
