DH & I just joined DVC this past weekend w/AKV as our home resort. I read another post saying this is addictive and I totally agree! We bought 200 points, knowing we'd either buy in some at the Contemporary or add on points. But we keep going back and forth as to what to do! I know its not a major dilemma at the moment, but I was wondering what others are doing....or what you would do if you'd choose one or the other. Contemporary location is awesome, but we still could stay there someday w/our points. It would cost more to buy in there, but not sure if we really care enough to really have to have points there. What do you think?

Well, we have 200....we'd probably add on the same number of points, despite what the price would be....most likely around 150. So either 150 at AKV or 150 at KTR. Just trying to figure out which we wanted to do.

If you just purchased, then you're better off waiting on any decision until you've done your virgin stay. Give yourself a chance to learn the reservation system and fall in love with your home resort. Then you can decide where and how much to add on. Your needs and wants do change as you get to know the system.

When we started in '06, we got 200 points because it was a nice even amount. We wanted to stay 5 weekdays in a studio at SSR twice a year (May and Oct). We swore we'd never go there for a holiday premium season as it was too crowded. And studios were all we needed.

But our first stay was in early December and we ended up getting a 1bedroom because that was the only size room they had available when we booked. We loved it. So much that when they had the Friends & Family promo we decided we could afford an add-on. (Our family had already laughed and asked when they got the chance to come with us.) So we purchased another 120 points.

Next stay was 8 days in May. We paid cash for the weekend nights (there was a work conference so we could comp some of the cost) and suddenly fell in love with the "longer than 5 day stays".

Then we got a 2bedroom and brought my sister's family down in October. The closer we got to the date the more we longed for a little down time after she left. So we tacked on another 3 days in a studio (our first studio stay). That made 9 days in Disney.

And remember that vow never to stay during a holiday? Well when we heard all about the fun on NYE, we decided to book that. A 3-day studio stay paying premium points.

Next I knew we were booking longer, more often and found we just loved our home resort so much we dreamt about it. I swore at 320 points that our next add-on would be at CRV/KTR in another year or so.

But as time stretched on and we made yet another NYE booking with plans to get a 2bedroom later, Disney came out with another promo (the current one). We weren't gonna do it. Even let it expire. But darn Disney extended it and with 430 points we could stay NYE, in 1bedrooms, 2bedrooms, studios and not really worry about paying cash nights or leaving early. So we decided to bite on add-on #2 in year #3.

I still have CRV in mind, but my plans are for a smaller 50-75 pt add-on. Just enough for a 3 day studio stay per year. Probably Fall when the Halloween festivities are happening, or early December.

One thing to consider with add-ons is that you get them for the Home Resort priority ONLY for the points at that resort. So even though you have 350 points total, you'd only be able to use 200 at AKV and 150 at KTR. That makes it a lot harder to book larger point accommodations in difficult times.
