Can't decide between three hotels at DL gate

We have stayed at PVI twice and DIS three times, really a toss up. PVI has better breakfast and easier to park if you have a car. The parlor rooms at DIS are nice, even a few extra square feet can make a difference at times. If it is just me or two of us, I pick the cheaper of the two. If the whole family is coming down, then we try first to get the three queen rooms at PVI and if not available go with DIS or next on list-Carousel usually (pretty sure we have stayed at almost every hotel on Harbor except BW Park Place Inn and do not have any true favorites-my back has issues with all of the beds).

I didn't find the beds at DIS uncomfortable, fwiw. Of course, I was so tired from being in the parks all day...

I've stayed at PVI and DI&S.

I'm a HUGE PVI fan, for several reasons...

(1) The walk cannot be beat. I mean, yes, BWPPI is just a crosswalk away (a crosswalk that everyone ignores). And DI&S is only a hotel away... But both BWPPI and DI&S are long hotels, and I'll admit I'm a bit lazy after walking 13+ miles in a day a Disneyland! I don't like seeing the front of my motel and then having to keep on walking...and walking...and walking to get to my room.

(2) The beds are super-comfy. Pillow top softness with firm mattresses below; but not overly firm. They are just perfect. And after a long day, sinking into bed is wonderful. I found DI&S beds very hard. Hard enough that I considered sleeping on the floor. I also considered taking the bus to Target to get an air mattress. You shouldn't need to consider that on vacation.

(3) Hot water is a wonderful thing. The easiest way I avoid waking up with sore legs is to take a shower or soak in warm water after we get back to the motel. I also like warm showers in the morning. And I like taking a dip in the hot tub without getting a rash. I got a nasty case of folliculitis at the hot tub at DI&S.

(4) Speaking of showers, PVI has some wonderfully soft and large towels that actually serve to cover me while I dry off. Not bath sheet size, of course, but they aren't those tiny towels, and they aren't scratchy.

(5) PVI has an on-site store, and Cold Stone Creamery. It was easy to stop off at the store, or the vending machines, to get a $1.75 soda (thereby saving $1.50 from park prices). I'm only slightly embarrassed to admit I ran to their store in my pajamas for a quick snack more than once. And, they have a huge selection of souvenirs. Of course, they can't have anything that says "Disneyland" but "California" with Mickey and Minnie seems to make the point for many people. They also have potentially-forgotten necessities, like the hairbrush my DD didn't think of packing and the toothbrush I forgot.

(6) Breakfast. DI&S has a meager offering for breakfast: 2 cereals (neither safe for my family), toast, apples/oranges (cut, so you can't take them with you for a snack), packaged danishes, juice, milk, and weak coffee. My BFF isn't a coffee snob, and makes her coffee pretty weak, and even she complained that their coffee was gross. By contrast, PVI has hot items (over the years, we've had biscuits and gravy, waffles, fried potatoes, hashbrowns, bacon, sausage, eggs, and more), along with fruits, cereals, yogurt, toast/bread, coffee, teas, juices, milk, and more. While we aren't huge breakfast eaters, it still saves us a fair amount!

(7) Customer service. This is where places earn my business or lose my business. My father-in-law passed away unexpectedly 4 days before my Disneyland vacation. I was booked for my 2nd stay at DI&S. Obviously, I had to cancel the trip. But, my bad, I forgot to cancel the hotel. It was 36 hours before my stay. I understand, I understand--it wasn't 48 hours, so legally they had every right. But, my young-ish father in law had just died, and they thought I would think about cancelling my hotel reservation ust hours after my father in law died?!? The manager said they would refund the money "if we can rent the room," and then held the money "pending" for 10 days before finally charging us for the room. I understand, they had the legal right. But it's not like they are a huge chain. They had the ability to just cancel it and not charge me. And there was no way for me to prove or disprove that they were or weren't able to rent my room, so I had no legal recourse. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. I hope that when their beloved patriarch of their family dies that they are treated with more care and understanding than my family was! We had 4 future stays booked with them. Of course, my money doesn't make or break them, but, again, they lost all our future bookings! At PVI, they have always acted like I was their only guest. They called to make sure I didn't need anything. They left DH and I a sweet little present for our honeymoon stay. When there was a billing issue (my dad was trying to pay for a night of my honeymoon, and wasn't getting his desire across on the phone, so I got there, explained he situation to the desk person when my dad was on the phone, and she immediately got the night taken off my credit card and on to my dad's. They have also opened our room for us, after already checking out, when I realized I had forgotten my engagement ring in the room, and then even helped look for it! (They found it :) )... Oh, and they do military discounts, and returning guest discounts. It always feels like PVI wants my business. Not so much at DI&S.

So, there's my dissertation on why I love PVI.
How do you get the returning guest discount? We had the new Homewood Suites booked but have to change our dates from the mid of June to 4th of July week and Homewood price increases by ALOT so it looks like we will be staying at PVI again this trip

Call them to make the reservation, and let them know you're a returning guest. Easy peasy!

I don't recall an extra charge for breakfast when we stayed at the Desert Inn.

Oh my goodness, that is certainly what I WROTE... what I MEANT is the charge for parking! Sorry to confuse anyone! I really should proofread for clarity before I post these things. Sorry about that!

If you do choose Dessert Inn and Suites, be sure that you have the exact cost (per night, total including tax, etc.) in writing.

We were pretty loyal to that hotel and usually stayed there when we went on vacation. The last time we booked a room there (~4 years ago), we booked the room via their website for 8 months in advance. We called and confirmed the reservation and price, got an email with the total and confirmation number, etc. Everything was fine and set. About a month before our vacation, we called to confirm once more that we did indeed have a reservation with the price. When we called, they told us that we did have a reservation but the cost was $20 more a night than what we reserved it for (this was not tax, this was on top of the total price including tax and the resort fees). When we gave them the confirmation number, they told us that there is no way we booked that price (I believe it was $85 per night, more on weekends) and we were going to be charged the added price. When you're staying there for 12 nights, $20 extra a night adds up quickly, especially only a month out. We ended up canceling our reservation there and went for another hotel down the street for a comparable price. We were lucky we even got a hotel room close by with only a month out. We would have been very upset if we learned of this upon arrival had we not called. The lesson in all of this rambling is - be very sure you call and confirm your reservation and booked price multiple times, especially before your day of travel.

When we were there before, breakfast mainly consisted of doughnuts, bread, jam, etc. Nothing like yogurt, etc. If your family likes cereals and yogurt, you might be better ordering off Vons delivery. We've used them 3 times now and have had great service from them.

How on EARTH could they change the price when you had it in writing??? They must have sent an email confirmation if you booked online.....???

We had the total amount, but they said they couldn't honor that price and that weekend nights were going to be higher or something like that. We didn't have the per night amount on the email, just the confirmation number and the total cost (tax, resort fees, etc.). It was a pretty weird situation that we never experienced before. There was no way they were going to give us the reserved price though, they were pretty adamant about that on the phone.

Wow. That is rather disconcerting as I have 2 upcoming reservations with them (only stayed once before...). I may have to rethink this. Thanks for the information!

We didn't have any problems with the beds either.

The poster did say this was 4 years ago. I think the hotel has improved over the last few years. The email we got for our trip last May did show the price per day. We made changes to our stay a few times and the only difference in price was the day we added at the end of our trip.

Also, they upgraded their breakfast room a few years ago. The first time we stayed it was tiny and the breakfast was like an apple and a pastry. The last time we stayed the room was more than double the size and breakfast included the pastry as well as eggs, two fruit choices, juice, coffee, and a couple cereal options. No yogurt. They have also been upgrading their rooms. It's not the nicest hotel in the city for sure, but it is a decently priced hotel, very close, and sufficient for our needs. But do keep parking and resort fees in mind when determining price.

I will say we've stayed at the Quality Inns (two of them) and they have a good little breakfast.

I would go with whichever is cheapest. We actually choose to stay at hojo and walk a bit more, but I've visited others at all 3 hotels. The walk is about even. The beds will be hit or miss depending in your individual preference. There's more space at Desert Inn. The breakfast seems best at Best Western to me, but not sure if they have what you'll want. I'd just not worry about breakfast and go to the drug store on Harbor and Katella (a little walk but cheaper than closer stores) to grab what you need on your first day and keep it in the fridge.

Are the beds really that bad?

Is there a place nearby that one can pick up cereals & milk? Maybe a 24hr place? I have a feeling my kids will be up before 5am the first morning coming from the east coast!

Thanks for all the input everyone!

I am used to a Tempurpedic mattress at home, so really all hotel beds are horrible for me. I found ours to be on the too firm/lumpy side of things. I slept okay but did wake up a bit sore. I think some rooms may have better beds though so who knows.

We were in a parlor suite, top floor, near the the back of the hotel.

We had a rental car so we drove to Target down the street. Not sure what is in walking distance. Sorry.

I have the DIS book May 23 - May 29, 2016. This will be for my daughter's high school graduation. I really liked the idea of the pool and sauna. I was thinking of bring some cinnamon bread, fruit bars, Starbucks Via and then if there was something close getting yogurt or something. Is there a convenience store close to the hotel? I thought if I could do those things for breakfast we could then do lunch and dinner. Will do a better breakfast one or two mornings but will try and save there. Can I bring bread on the plane???

You certainly could bring bread on the plane, I'm sure. But it would likely get a bit squished.

There is a 7-11 at 611 w. Katella. I haven't been there so I'm not sure what all they have. But that looks to be the closest place on Google maps. Of course, grocery items always seem to be pretty pricey at convenience stores though.

If you have Amazon Prime, I've heard of people have a box of items delivered using Prime Pantry. (Again, haven't tried this myself though.)

Okay, so don't think I'm going to change DIS reservation yet.

What about skipping breakfast altogether and going Carousel Inn? There's a D23 discount now and some of their suites seem pretty nice.

You do know the pool at DIS is a small indoor pool? We couldn't even use it it was so hot and humid in there and it stunk of chlorine so bad. It's one reason we don't stay there anymore.

If a pool is important to you, I wouldn't stay at the DIS.

There is a decent convenience store just down the street, attached to the Tropicana. Maybe about 4 minutes walking distance. Their prices were quite reasonable, considering the area.
Don't take bread on the plane. Too much hassle to save about $1 a loaf...

Last year I stayed at the Park Vue and was put in the weirdest room. It had bamboo tacked all over the walls. I think there were also vines and mirrored walls. It was almost like a theme room? My friend's room was normal.

But the hotel was fine, the pool was closed on our second day and they let us use the DI&S pool.

I prefer the Tropicana, then BWPPI but I think in that cluster of hotels they're all basically the same.

I also just realized the Bamboo room was the Del Sol. And I don't think I can edit?
Anyway. Bamboo room was at the Del Sol.

I've stayed at DIS & BWPPI. The BWPPI is superior. DIS is ok on a very budget trip booked pretty far out. Their prices increase the closer to travel time you get.

I've only stayed at DIS once. We've been back to BWPPI multiple times. It's not available on our next trip booked only 1 month out. So we're settling for the new spring hill suites. It's quite a walk but I'm excited to stay somewhere new. We may get ART.
