Can't decide between three hotels at DL gate

Okay, I keep flipping between BW Park Place Inn, Park Vue, and Desert Inn & Suites. All are right outside the walkway to the Esplanade. Which should I take? Here are some factors:

  • 2 adults & 4 kids (all 3 hotels have rooms that sleep 6)
  • Breakfast is needed, but just a cereals & yogurt kind of family (in other words, don't care about whose eggs are better)
  • Earliest breakfast start time? (Magic Morning + East coast jet lag)
Desert Inn got a nice note in the Unofficial Guide to Disneyland.
Park Vue got highest ranking on TripAdvisor

So, Disneyland experts, debate! Which one should I choose?

Do they all have yogurt and cereal?

Even when we stayed at PPI I ignored any breakfast they had. If those were the things I wanted I'd rather make an order from Von's grocery store (it's what Safeway is in southern CA) for the items I want, and keep those things in a fridge. If I had a fridge.

I was just at DIS in October, and BWPPI in June... I don't remember either one of them having yogurt... not sure about granola. Having said that, I think the breakfast at BWPPI was more extensive than the one at DIS.

If it were up to me, I would go with whichever is least expensive. Both the ones I mentioned charge about 9 or 10 dollars per day.

Park Vue Inn has free breakfast from 7-10, I'm not sure about the yogurt it might be listed on their site.

I've never stayed at DIS, but does the room you are looking at have two bathroom? That might sway me!

We like BWPPI, and there are 5 of us. Last summer I know they had yogurt! We have always had good stays here.

I'm getting the feeling that there isn't much of a difference here...

Does any one of these have a breakfast that starts earlier than 7am?

I normally stay at the BWPPI and they have cereal (a few types) and yogurt (they're the individual servings in little containers - like the ones you get at the grocery store). I think they also started serving at 7:00 am, but I'm not 100% sure of that (I vaguely recall that they weren't open yet when we walked back to the motel after the 24-hour day around 6:15 am, so I'm thinking they're more likely to be open at 7:00 am).

You'll get more floor space (2 rooms and bathrooms) at DI&S if you book one of their parlour suites. I don't think breakfast is early enough for MM anywhere, but DI&S has a fridge. Just buy some yogurt and eat in your room and get to the gate in time.

We loved park vue!! There breakfast is early enough to get to the parks on time and its AWESOME!!! We were gonna stay at the new homewood suites because I got a great rate and now we are going to have to change our dates and it is a lot more there so we will most likely be going back to park vue inn!!

Honestly with those three hotels I would go with the best OVERALL rate. Keep in mind other fees like parking and resort fees.
If the 6:30 breakfast is a big deal then choose BW. However, if you plan to grab breakfast at 6:30 and then head to the park for 7:00 Magic Morning, just be aware that you may be at the gates later than ideal.

I've stayed at PVI and DI&S.

I'm a HUGE PVI fan, for several reasons...

(1) The walk cannot be beat. I mean, yes, BWPPI is just a crosswalk away (a crosswalk that everyone ignores). And DI&S is only a hotel away... But both BWPPI and DI&S are long hotels, and I'll admit I'm a bit lazy after walking 13+ miles in a day a Disneyland! I don't like seeing the front of my motel and then having to keep on walking...and walking...and walking to get to my room.

(2) The beds are super-comfy. Pillow top softness with firm mattresses below; but not overly firm. They are just perfect. And after a long day, sinking into bed is wonderful. I found DI&S beds very hard. Hard enough that I considered sleeping on the floor. I also considered taking the bus to Target to get an air mattress. You shouldn't need to consider that on vacation.

(3) Hot water is a wonderful thing. The easiest way I avoid waking up with sore legs is to take a shower or soak in warm water after we get back to the motel. I also like warm showers in the morning. And I like taking a dip in the hot tub without getting a rash. I got a nasty case of folliculitis at the hot tub at DI&S.

(4) Speaking of showers, PVI has some wonderfully soft and large towels that actually serve to cover me while I dry off. Not bath sheet size, of course, but they aren't those tiny towels, and they aren't scratchy.

(5) PVI has an on-site store, and Cold Stone Creamery. It was easy to stop off at the store, or the vending machines, to get a $1.75 soda (thereby saving $1.50 from park prices). I'm only slightly embarrassed to admit I ran to their store in my pajamas for a quick snack more than once. And, they have a huge selection of souvenirs. Of course, they can't have anything that says "Disneyland" but "California" with Mickey and Minnie seems to make the point for many people. They also have potentially-forgotten necessities, like the hairbrush my DD didn't think of packing and the toothbrush I forgot.

(6) Breakfast. DI&S has a meager offering for breakfast: 2 cereals (neither safe for my family), toast, apples/oranges (cut, so you can't take them with you for a snack), packaged danishes, juice, milk, and weak coffee. My BFF isn't a coffee snob, and makes her coffee pretty weak, and even she complained that their coffee was gross. By contrast, PVI has hot items (over the years, we've had biscuits and gravy, waffles, fried potatoes, hashbrowns, bacon, sausage, eggs, and more), along with fruits, cereals, yogurt, toast/bread, coffee, teas, juices, milk, and more. While we aren't huge breakfast eaters, it still saves us a fair amount!

(7) Customer service. This is where places earn my business or lose my business. My father-in-law passed away unexpectedly 4 days before my Disneyland vacation. I was booked for my 2nd stay at DI&S. Obviously, I had to cancel the trip. But, my bad, I forgot to cancel the hotel. It was 36 hours before my stay. I understand, I understand--it wasn't 48 hours, so legally they had every right. But, my young-ish father in law had just died, and they thought I would think about cancelling my hotel reservation ust hours after my father in law died?!? The manager said they would refund the money "if we can rent the room," and then held the money "pending" for 10 days before finally charging us for the room. I understand, they had the legal right. But it's not like they are a huge chain. They had the ability to just cancel it and not charge me. And there was no way for me to prove or disprove that they were or weren't able to rent my room, so I had no legal recourse. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. I hope that when their beloved patriarch of their family dies that they are treated with more care and understanding than my family was! We had 4 future stays booked with them. Of course, my money doesn't make or break them, but, again, they lost all our future bookings! At PVI, they have always acted like I was their only guest. They called to make sure I didn't need anything. They left DH and I a sweet little present for our honeymoon stay. When there was a billing issue (my dad was trying to pay for a night of my honeymoon, and wasn't getting his desire across on the phone, so I got there, explained he situation to the desk person when my dad was on the phone, and she immediately got the night taken off my credit card and on to my dad's. They have also opened our room for us, after already checking out, when I realized I had forgotten my engagement ring in the room, and then even helped look for it! (They found it :) )... Oh, and they do military discounts, and returning guest discounts. It always feels like PVI wants my business. Not so much at DI&S.

So, there's my dissertation on why I love PVI.

We have stayed at PVI and DI&S multiple times, never at BWPPI so I can't help out there!

DI&S
Pros: Lower price, MUCH better Wifi, some suites have 1 1/2 or even 2 full bathrooms - very helpful for families.
Cons: *slightly* longer walk, definitely inferior breakfast, harder beds.

PVI
Pros: closer to crosswalk, convenience store onsite, much better breakfast, softer beds
Cons: higher cost, inferior Wifi

If it is just the 3 of us going, we will pick DI&S but if my SIL joins us then we usually go for PVI since the increased cost is offset by not buying breakfast.

We've stayed at DI&S. it was decent. I liked the bigger than normal hotel fridge. Still a mini fridge but bigger than most.

We booked PVI this trip. I think lalasmama's description of PVI among other things (free parking and better breakfast) is what swayed me.

I don't recall an extra charge for breakfast when we stayed at the Desert Inn.

Of the hotels listed, I have only stayed at the Desert Inn. Yes, their beds aren't great. But for the price and the size room we got, I deal with that. (And I am seriously considering spending $25 on this to have shipped to the hotel for our stay....http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Better-...id=1452804437&sr=8-1&keywords=foam+bed+topper.) We were in a parlor suite and the extra space was great. We went to Target and picked up our own cereal and milk to have at breakfast. Though I did send my husband down to the hotel breakfast a couple times so I could have tea. And I think I recall eating a donut or muffin a few times too.

We always had hot water when we showered. All of the staff was very nice. We did have a leaky sink and it was fixed quickly.

Overall, the price for what you get is worth it to me. As soon as February 2017 dates open on their site...we'll be booking again. Especially since you have until 48 hours before to cancel. And even after that window, you are only charged for 1 night.

Are the beds really that bad?

Is there a place nearby that one can pick up cereals & milk? Maybe a 24hr place? I have a feeling my kids will be up before 5am the first morning coming from the east coast!

Thanks for all the input everyone!

It seems some beds are worse than others. I like a plush-top, firm-ish underneith, and these beds had no plush top, and were as pretty darn firm. Like I mentioned above--I considered actually sleeping on the floor because the beds were so firm.

But it seems like I've heard some rooms have newer/better mattresses. I'm just not willing to chance it.

We stayed at Desert Inn and Suites and just had a regular room - the price was the best of comparable options. The breakfast, though, sucked. Wasn't a big deal for us - two adults who chose Starbucks in the parks anyway - but if you want yogurt, etc., Desert Inn didn't seem to have that. I only noticed cereal and pre-packaged danish that you might find at a 7-11. And there was almost no space in the breakfast area to eat anything so most people were hanging outside on curbs and a few small tables to eat. If breakfast is a big deal for you, stay at another option.

We have done both BWPPI & Desert Inn & Suites. I think they are comparable but I think Desert Inn was cheaper and we liked it more. We don't care to eat at the hotels breakfast but we found that the people in our party who did go down to the breakfast room at Desert Inn found what they wanted, got coffee and ate it on our walk over. Nothing special but it was clean and did the job.
