I am considering upgrading from my Canon S3-IS to the new Canon SX40IS. The new Canon has a 35X zoom!

Target has it for a good price this weekend of $379 and with their credit card it knocks off another 5%. Very tempting.

Is anyone familiar with it? Any thoughts pro or con?

Thanks.....

I upgraded my S3IS to the 40HS. I am loving it!!!! The zoom is unbelievable!!!

I shoot in AV mode the majority of the time. The only con I have ran into thus far is that when I am changing my aperture, my finger tends to hit other buttons. I am getting much better at not doing this.

Here are a few pics for you. The full zoom of the elk was hand-held. Not a great picture by any definition, but you at least can see the capability of how far out you can reach.

Notice the field in the middle of the pic. There is a finger of pasture off to the top right. That is where the elk are.

Those pictures are very impressive.

How do you find the camera in low light situations? Do you notice much noise in low light shots? Have you had a chance to do fireworks with it? If so, how did that work out?

What kind of battery life do you get? I am used to my S3 where Ican go through an entire week of shooting at WDW (over 700 shots) and still keep going long into the year before the Energizer E2 batteries give out. I know I would miss the convenience of using AA batteries. Any thoughts?

Many thanks...

The only low light situations were when my cats were holding down the couch;). I'll post them, but they are pretty boring!!! No PP done to them.

Glad I checked before I hit submit reply, two more of DH shooting in his crossbow. It is actually darker out than it looks on the pictures. You can see the motel behind has it's lights on and the moon in the background. He has a lighted reticle scope and wanted to try it out in a darker than normal situation. The one with the dark corners, I was playing with one of the modes. Can't remember which one:confused3. Again, no PP. Not the greatest of pictures for you, so please don't judge this camera's ability by my photos:rolleyes1!

As far as battery life, I can't say how many shots I have taken with one charge, but it seems to do very well. I did not purchase an extra battery yet, but I am not afraid to take it for an all day outing and it running out. I love using rechargables in my S3. I still have my origionals from '06, and they are still going strong.

I do want to purchase a UV and a ND filter at some point. UV mainly to protect the lens, and the ND because I like to do shoot waterfalls using longer exposure times.

Sorry, no fireworks yet!!

Good for you!!! I truly hope you enjoy it!!!

I thought maybe my nighttime pics may have scared you off:lmao:!!! I am much more of a daytime, scenic/nature kind of a gal. I am sure this camera is capable of MUCH better nighttime pics than what I had to offer you:thumbsup2! I just need alot much practice:).

Not scared off at all. I didn't have issues with your shots, I know there are so many variables involved AND there are some issues that can be corrected after the fact. Its amazing how much more info are in digital pictures that you actually see. Post processing can yield so much!
