Canon S3

I wanted to try and download the CDHK hack, but was unable to because I use a Scan Disk Ulta II card. I like the faster card in the camera, can someone point me in the right direction as to how I can have the best of borth worlds? Fast card and the hack.
Thanks in advance for all of your help

This would've been a piece of cake decision, but it got complicated when graduating DD wanted a "good" camera for graduation, and took away part of my budget.

From all you s3/s5 users - am I going to be just as happy going with the s3 as I would the s5? I know the upgrades - video past 1GB, hotshoe, 8MP instead of 6, larger LCD screen - but really and truly - from you users - would I be happy with the S3, which I can get significantly cheaper? Placing order either today or tomorrow......

My side of it - If I go with the S3, I can spend a little on accessories - cards, basic filters, lens hood, for mine. If I go with the S5 - no extra goodies for me for a while. I'm definitely on a budget, especially since I'm buying two cameras and not just one.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I have never played with an S5 before, but did have my hands on an S3 for a bit.

From what I have read on both, the S3 is supposed to actually have slightly better High ISO performace. Based on that and budget constraints, if I was in your shoes, I would buy the S3.

Canon coming out with a newer model, did not make the S3 any less good of a camera. Get it, learn and grow with it, and then when you've outgrown what it will do for you, you'll be ready to move to a dSLR anyway.

so there is my 19 cents

My wonderful husband bought me and S5 today as an early Mother's Day present! I had my heart set on a DSLR but then I realized that I really wanted something with video capabilities and when I found the S5 I knew it was everything I wanted/needed.

I've only had it out of the box for an hour and I already love it. This thread has given me some great tips and inspiration, thank you :).

IIRC, there should be no reason why you can't put the CHDK hack on an UltraII card ... I've got it on all of three of mine; two 2G and one 1G....

What problem are you having?

There is an issue with SDHC cards which requires you creating a "bootable" card ... here's a link to the information page about it.

When it comes to *pure* IQ (Image Quality) issues, the S3 actually has a slight edge (6MP vs 8MP is most of the cause).

The S3 is also faster ... 2.3fps vs 1.5fps.

I think it's safe to say that unless you *really* needed an external flash, or already had one to use, you will be *completely* happy with an S3. :goodvibes You can get better than 1G video limit with the CHDK "hack", too.

Right now, the only thing I'd trade my S3 for is a DSLR with a couple of good lenses.... :thumbsup2

Thanks for the information. I will try again. Must be something to do with "operator error"

:welcome: There is a lot of great information in this thread! Well, at least in the first 62 pages. That's as far as I've been able to get so far!

bigAWL - I have not been able to find a noise reduction plug-in for GIMP. There was reference to DCAM2NOISE in some tutorials. I did find the source code to that, but am much too lazy to compile it myself! I guess noiseware will continue to be my choice for a while...

LaurieG - I also have CHDK on a 2GB Ultra II card.

A little somethin' from my weekend (the part where I wasn't stung by a scorpion):

Glad to see none of you have been banned! (If you don't know what I'm talking about, you (and/or your SO) probably don't hang out on the main community board).

My camera doesn't seem to be recording in stereo. It seems to be playing only out of the left channel speaker on the camera. I haven't plugged it into a TV/computer to check it but does that sound right?

Hi, guys!
Looking forward to joining the family soon - I have just ordred an S3 for myself and one for my DD. I've been shooting the same old Oly UZ for 5 years (shot DD's Sr. portraits with it this year) and decided it was time for a new toy! Since I'm buying TWO I didn't get to spend as much money on myself as I wanted, but I suspect I'll be VERY happy.

LPZ - question - I saw you posted about the hack on my thread - I looked over the link you posted - so this is totally and completely safe?? No funky virus that will disable or something that may cause some other irreversable problem with the camera?? I'm very interested in it, but color me paranoid.

With an upcoming WDW trip just around the corner, I'll have lots of fun pics to post on this 'family' thread! I'm very excited!

I'm not LPZ. But, the CHDK hack is only loaded from your SD card. So, if you put an SD card in the camera that doesn't have the hack on it, the camera can not run the CHDK software. The only problem I've had with CHDK is finding the time to figure out all of the cool stuff it can do!

Nothing is *totally and completely safe* ... not even the camera straight out of the box!

If I had to guess, there are hundreds -- if not thousands! -- of Canon Powershot camera owners using the CHDK "hack". It's one of the #1 subjects on *every* Canon camera forum I participate in. And, no one is having any permanent problems (lots of technical glitches, for sure, but no permanent damage!). With such a *huge* user-base, if there was anything funky going on, we'd hear about it! :thumbsup2

"Hack" and "hacker" automatically have negative connotations (and, in many cases, it's deserved!), but these guys are definitely the good ones! :goodvibes The technical expertise demonstrated by these programmers is astonishing -- and I'm a computer programmer by trade! :thumbsup2

The most important thing to understand is that CHDK is doing *nothing* to the actual firmware of the camera ... it's just adding a program that the camera is capable of running. After all, a digital camera is just a specialized computer....

Turn off your camera and CHDK is GONE! And, there's absolutely NO evidence it was ever there (unless, of course, you leave it on a card you leave in the camera :lmao: )

You *can* do damage to your camera by writing a script that's 'extreme' in nature; but you could do the very same damage by pushing the buttons ... that's all a script can do, mimic button presses!

I got my S5 and love it. But, I'm a little overwhelmed with all the settings and such. I have been taking various pictures of my family, dog, outside, birds, etc. Will post some soon.

I just got an S5 IS about a week ago and here are a few of my first pictures with it. I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to photography, hoping to work on my camera skills before our trip to WDW in Sept.

After reading the posts & seeing all your fantastic pictures I got an S5 just before I left for WDW. I ordered it through Costco (online) & didn't receive it until right before my trip. Love this camera! I'm going to be spending time learning its capabilities but the picture quality is so much better than my previous camera. I'm going to have to go through this thread for all the great hints everyone has posted. Looking forward to reading more about these great cameras. Thanks everyone!

Ok, Talk to me like I am a 2 year old! I downloaded the CDHK file and Bootable file on my SD Ulta II card and end up with nothing:confused3 . I locked the card and the camera tells me the card is locked and will not allow me to take pictures. I unlock the card and it doesn't do anything that it didn't do before. I am SURE that I am doing something stupid but can figure out what. Any ideas?

It works for my S3, at least manually - I haven't tried the autoboot method. Here are the steps after I insert the card with the files:

1- Turn it on to playback mode (it doesn't work for me if the lens is extended for taking photos).

2- Press Menu

3- In the first menu, scroll down to Firm Update...

4- Press Set

5- Press > (right direction button) to select OK

6- Press Set

7- Wait for the update to take.

Now I can see the battery percentage meter on screen. And I can access the new menus using the S button followed by Menu. If I switch directly to the record (taking photos) mode, it stays loaded in memory. But if I hit the Off button, it goes away.

Hope this helps.
