Canon S3

What is the difference between the lens, and how are they used? Sorry for more questions, but I don't know where else to go for answers. In reading through this board, I find most everyone is very knowledgeable about several cameras/lenses.

wide is to "widen" the angle of your shots. Say ini your frame you can only tak snow white and 5 dwarfs, with the additional lens you may be able to take sno White and 7 dwarfs + Goofy.

close-up add-on / macro adapter lens: to create semi-macro photography, you may be able to stand so close to Snow White and take a picture of her zit

tele-lens: allows you to zoom in further so you can take the picture of Prince Charming hiding (stalking) behind the bush.

Very well said Kelly.

But Snow White has never had a zit in her entire life.

This is exactly what I am looking for. - Thanks for the great explanation. :thumbsup2

another thing I notice is that I have to buy a new keyboard. Everytime I'm using this one particular wireless keyboard, my typing is messed up.

Well I've narrowed my choices down to these two.
I really like both, but one of the things that slightly concerns me is that Sony H5 has alot less scene modes than the S3.
H5 has the following:
• Twilight & Twilight Portrait
• Portrait
• Landscape
• Beach
• High-speed shutter
• Candle

While S3 has more (just to list a few):
• Night Scene
• Sports
• Foliage
• Snow
• Beach
• Fireworks
• Indoor

For those who use the H5 how/what mode would you use for a firework scene?

A big plus, however, w/ the H5 is the included bundled accessories include rechargeable AA NiMH batteries, charger, lens hood with adaptor and lens cap with strap, and USB and AV output cables. The S3 does not come w/ the additional accessories.

Your thoughs on both cameras and any suggestions would be so deeply appreciated. I so want to take fabulous pictures on our very first trip to Disney.

Thank you. :wave2:

After reading many threads on this board, it seems to me that ALOT of the Disers tend to have the Canon. I got the H5 a few weeks ago and have been LOVING it. The fact that there were fewer scenes was an issue for me, but I have a brother in law that knows photography and he will be teaching me how to use the manual modes to be able to shoot those extra scenes on the Canon with my Sony - especially fireworks! I'm still playing around in the backyard and most of my macro shots were amazing. I think when I learn more about the manual modes it will be better than just turning the dial to a preset scene mode for me. I have until Easter Break to perfect my skills which is a nice amount of time. Good luck with your decision.

please search one of my thread:

Sony H5 vs Canon S3 IS

and another thread dedicated to fireworks (it's a sticky_
and another that's in-progress: Learn Photography the Kelly Way (see signature)

Funny, i tried searching Sony H5 vs Canon S3 IS in advanced search field last night and it told me something about the string being too long? but I'll try again now thanks

prcoamo,
if I knew how to attach a photo on here, I would show you a firework shot I took with my Sony.

=-)

Thanks Sha. I ended up purchasing the Sony H5 (got a better deal on it) and am awaiting its arrival.
What setting(s) did you use for fireworks? I
I wish I could tell you how to post pictures on this board but I've never done it either (but i sure will learn after i get my new camera)
:thumbsup2

honestly, guys, taking fireworks picture is not a "special thing" that a special camera can do. Any camera can do fireworks perfectly. Look at my sticky on how to take fireworks picture (or read lesson 11 on my Photography Basics).

Literally ANY camera will be able to do that.

Thanks for the info! I am looking at the H5 and wanted to hear some opinions!

I ended up going with the H5 instead of the Canon, and am extremely happy with it! I have been playing around and coming up with some great shots. I always used the point and shoot scenes, but am trying to use the manual mode. Hard to do b/c I always had p&s, never a slr, but I am learning - and it's fun! Once I master this, in a few years it will be onto a dslr for me!

That is true about any camera is able to, and the person taking the shot. I learned by trying. I was just going to show a shot I did with my Sony... just not sure how to add here.

I have 2 Sony's... and I like them... and I am going to get a lens attachment soon. I took a photo on the 4th July... and I think it came out cool. Everyone has their preference on cameras. Yes, they are an investment on some of these... but you can also look at it this way... if you get one, and turns out you dont like it... and you have children who are old enough to handle it and not destroy it, it might be good to give to them to get them interested in photography and creativity. That is how I started with photography... and I am so glad that I got that chance.

I love the flip out screen on my S3, it's so useful in situation where you need to have the camera away from you normal eyeline - e.g. shooting over the heads of crowds.

OIC, I thought you meant that Sony can take greater picture than other camera (considering the topic title). However, YES, Sony camera is VERY capable of taking amazing fireworks picture. My MOST favourite picture of Wishes fireworks were taken by we-luv-disney with his Sony camera.

I purchased an S3 2 weeks ago and have been happily snapping pictures. I had using a 4 year old Sony P9 and I was really happy with how the S3 pictures looked on my computer...until tonight. I manage all our pictures in Adobe Photoshop Album and I imported 300 or so pictures tonight and was really disappointed to find that 2/3rd's of the pictures were grainy. I haven't had the chance to print any yet, but they don't look good.

About a third of the pictures have been taken using full auto with the remainder using the various program modes. Has anyone seen similar problems with an S3? Am I doing something wrong?
