i'll probably upgrade my mk2 to a mk3 later in the year - it should be a good winter since soccer enrollment is up over 150% (due to our performance in the world cup). i'm sure the demand will be up so they will be hard to come by for several months.

Interesting, that Canon stayed with the 1.3x sensor.
10 fps! If I did a lot of sports photography I might have to go into debt for this camera.

Yeah, it was the 10fps that caught my eye right off the bat. I wonder about them keeping the 1.3 myself.

i don't mind them keeping the 1.3 crop. it means there is still two different models of 1 series - one geared around studio and one around sports. the full frame requires more processing to keep up with the sensor so i doubt 10 fps (@22mpix) would have been possible at a reasonable price (give it 2 years).

my current body does 8 1/2 fps but i only use the bursting for skateboarding and motorsports. for sports, i actually us it in single shot mode. with AIServo it will keep the focus so whenever i need a shot i simply take it. if i need to take a sequence it's driven by my finger action.

i really like the notion of the 19 user defineable af points (plus the 26 assist points). it's the same number that the mk2 has overall but it would be nice to specifiy which points are available instead of the standard ones in the cross.

i'm also hoping the software with the digic III gives you the ability to map out hot pixels.

sorry mate... i'm sure the mk2 will get sold to help finance the mk3. it will be 4 or 5 months anyway at least.

I'd be curious if they were able to implement a live view LCD without making the standard viewfinder uselessly small and dim. (Though this camera seems aimed a lot more at sports photographers than the ones who'll be doing still life/macro photography.) It sounds like it might just be a normal viewfinder but in live mode, it behaves like a PnS in webcam/movie mode and just shows the "movie" video live on the LCD.

That's certainly well within the range of current camera brains; the new Sony PnS sensor that can record 2921x2184 resolution at 60fps is certainly proof of that (I'm sure the "live view" is much less resolution than that, probably native LCD resolution even when output over USB).

Frankly, I'd be a lot more interested in having the ability to record a decent-quality movie video on a DSLR than have a live LCD view, although I suppose you'd pretty much need the latter to get the former. But again, that's not a feature that the target audience cares much about, either.

i'm guessing they'll have a small suplementary sensor receiving light through a prism or something equally silly. yes it means the viewfinder will be dim so why bother. i don't know what 1 series user truly wants 'live view' like functionality ?? of course i don't want movie recording either

This and my annual incentive bonus were announced at the same time. Personally, I think it's fate. Sadly, after federal income tax, social security tax, and spousal landscaping tax, I don't know that I'll have enough left over. Too many hobbies, too little time and money.

Well, I'm sure you're aware that the in-body IS does shake the sensor to stabilize it, plus the K10D also have the dust-removal that shakes at startup (or whenever.)

I was thinking that Pentax was moving towards Canon if anything - they just "officially" announced a couple lenses I've love to have (16-50 2.8 and 50-135 2.8, both with internal focus motors and weathersealing) - until I saw the price, $900 and $1,000. That's getting into Canon territory.

Back on topic - has anyone ever commented on the, umm, "style" of the 1D series? Regardless of the quality of the stuff inside, the actual look of the thing isn't exactly attractive IMHO? Or am I nuts?

the 1 series since the 1v has had the same look. it's not much different than any other Canon body with a grip already attached. they're built like tanks. they don't have lots of dials and you have to get used to setting things with 2 fingers.
