Canon announce SX1 IS for North America

I got this camera for christmas and just LOVE IT!!! Going back to Alaska in July and can't wait to take loads of pictures.

Ok, those of you that know about this kind of stuff: is this the same sensor that's in a dSLR?

I know in all the talk about point&shoot vs dSLR, the sensor is mentioned as being the main selling point for the dSLR.

Never mind.....I checked out a couple of cameras on Canon's website, and it's the same sensor.

Ok, so this camera now has the "good" sensor, and it's 20x, which translates to a dSLR equivalent of 28-560. Amazon.com wants $600 for it. Looks like this is going to give the dSLR's a good run for the money!:thumbsup2

Sure wish *I* had the $$ to get one for myself. Dang economy!

Did you order it from overseas? How do you like it so far?

It sure looks like it has a lot to offer, Amy.

No, this is definitely not the same sensor.

The only thing it has in common with Canon's usual DSLRs sensors is that it's CMOS instead of the CCD as used in all other Powershots.

The superiority of DSLR sensors is in the size of them.

Sensor+sizes.jpg

The typical Canon DSLR sensor is just slightly smaller than the APS-C one in the image. Most PnS cameras have a 1/2.5" sensor - the little tiny one in the corner, with 1/15th of the surface area of an APS-C sensor.

The Canon SX1 has a 1/2.3" sensor, so slightly larger but not by much. Canon's DSLR sensor is, oh, probably still 13-14x larger.

Nobody makes a camera with a "full-sized" DSLR sensor in a big-zoom PnS. The closest things are the Sigma DP1 (APS-sized sensor but no zoom) and the new micro-4/3rds DSLRs (still DSLRs but smaller due to no mirror, and you can only use the LCD on the back to compose your photo.) If you put a DSLR sensor in a PnS and put on lens on it with a ton of zoom - you'll probably have something roughly the size of a DSLR with a big-zoom lens. :)

I ordered this camera on the 18th Feb and am waiting for it coming into stock, I have to wait til the 27th Feb:) I can't wait to play.

I cannot get hold of one in this part of the UK. All of our camera shops do not have them in stock.

Thanks for the info Groucho! So basically, the sensor on the new Canon will give me a better photo than my current Canon S3 IS, but it still won't be anywhere near as good as a dSLR.

So if I'm even remotely thinking about finding the $600 for this new Canon, I might as well spend another $300-$400 and get myself a decent entry-level dSLR, right?

But then that opens a whole new can of worms.....once you get a dSLR, then you start buying all the diff. lenses and filters, etc., etc. ;)

Decisions, decisions......

The two big things that the CMOS sensor makes possible are 4 FPS shooting (vs 1.5 on the SX10) and 1080p HD video. Apparently the HD video performance is quite good even in low light.

Amy---who knows, maybe with the new and improved bonus system at work, you'll be able to fund a whole dSLR kit....body, lenses, fancy tripod---the whole deal! ;) :lmao:

We can keep dreaming.

I will say though---it's a fun hobby and I feel an expenditure that is well worth it. :thumbsup2 Clothes will fit, not fit, rip, stain, pull...I don't think I'll have to ever worry about my neck strap not fitting (at least I sure hope not!)

Well, it's hard to say for sure. Your S3 probably has larger photosites (it's got a 1/2.5" sensor and 6mp, the SX1 has 1/2.3" sensor and 10mp) so there's no guarantee that the SX1 will produce any sharper photos or perform better in low light.

CMOS and CCD can be debated until the cows go home (are they still hanging around), but in the DSLR world, most non-Canon sensors until quite recently have been CCDs and they give up little if anything to Canon in image quality. CMOS may have a little bit of an edge in terms of low-light abilities and most new sensors have been CMOS.

I have one of these chaps. What to say?

It's no SLR. And since I am a pixel peeper, I am having a hard time learning to love it. Add to that that I bought it in the winter time when the Scottish air is heavy with moisture, and I don't even get the best out of the telephoto.

On the other hand, I'm becoming slowly happier with it, and am beginning to convince myself that I can go armed with it to WDW for the daytime at least.

My SX1 collection can be found on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/atp/collections/72157612940473121/. However, here are a few examples:

1. This ship is 1.6 miles away from the camera, hand held at ISO 200, with the light of the setting sun

2. The scaffolding poles on the underside of the bridge are about 0.5 miles away. ISO 80

4. Cropped, ISO 100. Note that my son moved, but the statue is pretty sharp!

I'll be interested to hear your opinions. It's not perfect, but I think it has potential. I've not really had a chance to use it in good outdoor light yet, and I am looking forward to the RAW update.

This is an impressive shot. I have a Canon 20D and a 50D, and this shot is in the ballpark for 1600.

Also, for those that wonder whether a DSLR is worth the money--it isn't just the money. It's the fact it's A LOT of money. When you buy a P&S, you're pretty much done. With a DSLR you're never finished spending: there's more lenses, flashes, software, tripods, more lenses, bags to carry all the lenses, an extra camera body because who knows when a body will blow up and you have all these lenses, little widgets you buy and wonder at some point why, and then you realize all the really good photographers have really expensive lenses that are white--not black like the unenlightened masses use--so it starts all over.

Honestly, though, there's much more to it than than just the camera. If you don't believe me, ask my wife. Just please wait until I'm out of the room.

Some really nice shots there, Alan, both here on this thread, as well as on your website. Very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much for the kind comments. I am not sure that I would like to try taking "important" high-ISO shots with the SX1, but it seems a useful general-purpose camera, when the weight and inconvenience of the SLR is more trouble than it's worth...

I await the RAW update with interest, and shall be sure to post whatever I get from it...

To be fair, I'd bet that the SX1 is doing way, way more software-based noise reduction on the image than the DSLRs are, which is going to be more evident at higher resolutions.
