I'm looking to buy my first digital. I have my canon rebel 2000 (film) and all the attachments and lens for taking real good photos so I just want a good touring camera at a good value. I was looking at the canon A530 and I liked the shutter speed (important in taking photos of my fast kids) and the 4x optical ( i forgot the digital zoom maybe 5x and to tell the truth I don't understand that one) the price was good too at $178. It was just a tad bigger than I wanted but I quess I gave that up for the 4x op. Any other suggestions on cameras I should look at or what I should look for. Thank you for any advice you can give :sunny:

and just a thought since a few months ago i was in exactly the same place you are now...if you want to get just a digital body your lens etc may work on a digital canon rebel xt( all eos lens...ef or efs, which would be what you have i would imagine... do work on digital rebel xt cameras)...i know some sigma lens need rechipped( and truthfully my old lens didn't work right but not sure if it was the chip or a problem from before) i had a rebel 2000 and can use a clunky promaster 100-300 ( just not a great lens to start with) with no problem and the rechipped with some problem...if you have canon lenses though you'd be in business
i went that way because my daughter's easy share drove me crazy with the shutter lag and i really didn't think i'd be happy with a little slow as molassis point and shoot and figured why spend 300 ( i was looking at the s2 since i knew the 4x zoom wouldn't be enough) on something faster when i could add a couple hundred and get a dslr that wouldn't give me the problems( the $100 rebate was on at the time)course then since my initial lens were junk i spent way more than 300 by buying new ones :teeth: :rolleyes1
i have to say i'm thrilled i made the switch to digital. i was happy with the film quality pics but the ease of the digital ( as far as you take them and can see them right away ) is great and now that this old dog is learning a little of the digital way( ) i wouldn't go back

there was a canon A520 i think looked good( 510 had less mp but still good pic quality from what i read)

and my daughter has the canon A 620 which takes great pictures if you still want a point and shoot ( same sensor as the canon s2 IS)

Is the body big or bulky? How much was that?

it's slightly smaller than the rebel 2000, unfortunatley you gotta add the lens so that makes it vary alot. i don't find it bulky and it's not that heavy even with my 28-135 lens that weighs quite abit

the body now is around 600 which is lots more than your p& s price but if you have a number of lenses already that would fit you might not need to spend much more..you might be able to get a used one on ebay for less, not sure as i haven't checked there..but you'd get great picture quality, no shutter lag and all the zoom your lenses give you. there is a pentax dslr on sale for around 400 ( think that inculdes the kit lens)now but that wouldn't help with your lenses

I just bought the A530 last night.. my other camera of 2 yrs suddenly lost the view finder.. it still takes pictues but you cant view them until you d/l them.
now my choice were to get the CANON SD450 since it has a rechargeable battery with the charger coming with it.. however it is $299 now at RITZ camera..
5 mega pix and only 3 zoom.. the A530 is $199 with AA batteries and I can get the rechargeable ones.. but.. it has a further zoom at 4 xs..Yes,, it has the larger size for handling..
What ever one you get .. they all have a further digital zoom.. The pixels is just the quality of the BLOW UP size.. for instance if you want to to a 30x20 poster size. than yes you need a 6 or 7 pixel camera. but i perfer to use more of a zoom, so a 5 pix with a 4 zoom is better for me.. I still wish it had the rechargable battery.. but the ENERGIZER ones should be good as long as I use them well..

I hope this helps you.. I like my CANON. it was easy to use.. and by all means get the EXTENDED WARRANTY>>>

Thanks guys I think I'm going w/ the canon A530. When I went on one of the above links and punched in al the things that were important to me on a camera the A530 showed up as the #1 choice for me. Thanks again.
