I currently have the Canon 50 f/1.8 and wanted to know the difference in these two.

Other than the extra reach, what would I get with the 85 that I wouldn't get with the 50? More sharpness?

Thanks so much!!

The difference is like night and day. I have both lenses and love the 85 f/1.8. You get much more sharpness and the color and contrast is beautiful. The focusing is much, much faster, especially in lower light. The focal length can be very flattering for doing portraits. The bokeh is great and the 85 actually feels like a quality product, not a lens you got out of the Cracker Jack box.

I have a few lenses that cost much, much more than this lens but the 85 is the sharpest tool in the box. The only reason I don't use it more often is the fixed focal length is hard to use in doors on a 1.6 crop body (you can only zoom out so far with your feet in the living room).

So not a real high score for versatility, but two thumbs way, way up for image quality. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

The 85 is sooo much different and better then the 50 1.8. The bokeh is TDF! It's a great outdoor lens (I don't use it inside much because of the length). I use it on my 5D and get great results! For the money, it is a fabu lens!

Thanks everybody!!!

That's what I wanted to hear! You have all just justified my next purchase!

Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No problem. But just to be honest, very rarely does this board ever talk anyone OUT of spending money.

If you need help feeding your habit, this is the place to visit.

50mm f/1.8 (~$100.00) vs. 85mm f/1.8 (~$300.00) is an unfair comparison. Of course, the 85 f/1.8 is a better lens!

A better question would be to compare 50mm f/1.4 vs. 85mm f/1.8. There are much closer is price and quality.
