Canon 50D

about the lens error message - try cleaning the lens contacts with a pencil eraser

Thanks for the advice, and I think you are right about the contacts. Here's how my day played out- it was quite an unnerving experience. I took the camera and lens to a camera repair shop that was recommended by a colleague of mine (who is a far better photographer than I am, so I trusted it). The guy running the shop was a little odd- he kept cutting me off and then acting irritated that I wasn't being specific enough, but he wouldn't let me finish a sentence. Then, when I asked what I could expect for the turn around time, he said, "Well, you're just f#$^& loaded with questions, aren't you?" It was a little unnerving, since I had just handed over my camera bag to him. But he has since called me and said that he thinks it is just the contacts that need to be cleaned and that the focus was probably slow because the contacts with the lens were not fully engaged. He'll call me tomorrow but hopefully everything is going to turn out ok!

The 50D does seem to be more sensitive to dirty contacts than my Rebels are. I just chalked it up to a quirk of the camera since it's so easy to clean them off if needed.

I'm pretty relieved to hear that this is a common problem and an easy fix. Thanks!

I had one of the screws on the metal plate the lens connects to come loose, tightened it and no more simular issues.
