I'm in the market for a new camera. I plan on giving my daughter my Rebel XT, and can't decide between these two.

which one would you chose and why?

I think a big factor for me would be what lenses do I already have and it would boil down to the question "which will give me more bang for the buck, body or glass".

If I only had a few basic lenses (kit, nifty fifty, etc) I would get the XSi and use the extra money on better glass or maybe a decent tripod or quality flash. If I already had quality lenses I would go for the 40d.

The difference in going from an XT to a 40d may not have as big an impact on your photos as going from the kit lens to an "L". However, if you really, really need 6.5fps, then you will be dissapointed with only 3.5fps on the XSi.

The 40D has a pentaprism viewfinder so it will be much brighter, it goes to 3200 ISO, it is a fair amount larger and has a more solid build, it has a max 1/8000 shutter speed and a 1/250 flash sync, almost 3x the amount of RAW buffer, the rear dial and top LCD screen. It also continues to use the same size cards as what you currently have. And is rated at almost 2x the number of shots per charge on a battery.

However the XSi does give you the big thing I was looking for when I orignially upgraded from my XT in spot metering.

I love my 40D and am glad that I purchased it, after almost 10K shots with it, I picked up my XT the other day and it really felt like a toy in my hands, I didn't notice it when that was what I was using all the time, but now I really do.

Thanks guys. :)

I went ahead and ordered the 40D :woohoo: it will be here tomorrow. all I can say is that I'm glad I had a special camera fund saved up for this purchase because it sure was expensive! :cat:

WooHoo! Mine's arriving tomorrow too, Linda!:woohoo:

One thing to consider...my XT is less than 2 years old, so you just saved your daughter from itching to upgrade in a few years! ...of course, there will be bigger and better by then...:rolleyes1

i think i'll buy the xsi and you buy the 40d and we'll trade even steven:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

It's probably a little early on the XSi, it's not available yet and are there even any "real" reviews of it floating around? It's a new sensor (I believe?) so who knows how it'll compare to the older ones in regard to noise, etc.

Either way, the XSi is entry-level (read: scene modes, less features, cheaper construction) and the 40D is mid-level (more features, not as easy for DSLR beginners.)
