Canon 400D (Rebel Xti, Kiss X)

I just bought the camera from Wolf Camera this past Friday - US version.

I got the Wolf Camera extended warranty.

I have to tell ya - I LOVE LOVE LOVE the camera. It is easy for even an eager novice like me.

Just got my 50MM f/1.8 lens from amazon too. Tried it out on my dogs, Disney ornaments and my oldest DD (got some great "MOM - please stop" looks from her :lmao: ). It is a fantastic lens. I can't wait to try it tomorrow when I take pictures of my preschool class for parent gifts and then again on Saturday for my youngest DDs dance recital.

To be fair, the lack of a warranty has nothing to do with it being sold for less. It's sold for less when it can be purchased for less by not having to deal with the local country's distributor.
That may be, but if the US and import versions are priced identical and both are available, why would anyone buy the import? Without the price savings, no one buys the import.

No disagreement from me there. But the warranty is not the reason for the price difference, it's just because the cameras can sometimes be imported for cheaper. If they cost more, then no one would bother importing them and there wouldn't be a reason to even consider it (like it is with most electronics.)

They're imported because they're cheaper, instead of being cheaper because they're imported.

so are they or are they not the same thing( i mean except the warrenty)? i thought i had read on some consumer place they might be a cheaper ie not as well made version but is that not true? just in case i don't listen to my own advice am someday tempted by a lower import price i want to know how hard to kick myself :rolleyes1

I'll agree with that.

This part adresses your question specifically:

"Are there ever differences?

Sometimes - and when there are we'll say so. For many Nikon, Canon, or Minolta cameras, there are name differences. The Nikon N90s in the USA is marketed as the F90x in Europe and Asia; Minolta's Maxxum line in the USA is their Dynax line overseas; and Canon's EOS Elan IIE in the USA is their EOS 50E elsewhere. Occasionally, there are more substantial differences.

I was also told (Whether true or not) that the overseas version is just the camera (no operator manual or cords). I preferred these plus the extras you get with the USA package.

I too am looking at an Xti. The difference with a kit and a body only is that more serious photographers may only want a body because they already have lenses or they are taking specialized photographs that require a lens that is different from the one-size-fits all kit lens. So to save money, since some of these lenses can cost WAAAAAYYYYY more than the camera, they offer the body only.

That sounds like a VENDOR issue, if you buy from a reputable dealer it should come with all the manuals/battery/charger/strap/32mb card/software... US or Grey market some vendors just pull that game.

May we ask WHAT dealer made such claims?????

I know very many beginning snapshooters that have skipped the kit lens in order to buy a one size fits all ZOOM lens(18-125MM), the kit lens is not exactly a do it all lens.

I was on the phone ALL day trying to find a good price without being sheistered. Most of them said they they didn't have it in stock ( for the best prices) Then when you find one in stock they say it is just the camera with no warranty. It is really frustrating trying to make sure you are getting what you want, because so many offer the hidden deals on cameras. If you don't ask the right questions you will end up with a piece of junk. I personally feel there should be more control over the companies posting the bad products and making it sound like they are offering a DEAL!!!

IMO there are 4 tiers of Camera dealers.

1. Customer service KINGS, online throwbacks to the old camera store that had knowledgable reps and great return policy. Very accurate inventory shown on website. EXAMPLES = B&HPHOTO, CanongaCamera, and ADORAMA

2. PRICE KINGS and fast delivery, great prices but the reps(if any) may not have any knowledge but they have the best prices in town from reputable dealers. Return policy maybe subject to 15% restocking fee unless you exchange for the same item due to delivered defective. If you find anyone with lower prices you need to be catious. Examples= Buydig, BeachCamera

3. Great DEALS at a price, Sometimes beat BUYDIG prices by a decent chunk but be prepared for either a LONG WAIT for delivery, or a high pressure sales call. Examples butterflycamera, DELL

4. RIP OFF ARTISTS, sound like the ones you describe. Sometimes advertise in the back of photo mags, with UNBELIEVABLE prices. When you call to order they try to sell you add ons, if you refuse they tend to be out of stock or they tell you that the camera does not include a battery charger. I would not trust these businesses with my credit card info. EXAMPLES= Royal Camera, Broadway camera.

I would post the dealers name here on the board b4 you buy, maybe a fellow poster can give you some feedback.

I really doubt you can beat Buydigs price on a camera body, they have free delivery and charge no sales tax.

For lenses I would stick with B&H.

I haven't seen B&H beat any of the prices at Beach. At least the items I looked at. That said I still usually buy from B&H. I fell like they are the most reputable of the online dealers. So I pay a little more for great customer service. But if you are talking price, Beach is definately the way to go.

I am a two time Buydig/Beach customer and I am nothing but happy with them. They have very fast delivery. Mine shipped the same day when ordered at around 2:00PM. I even had a problem with the credit card company halting the sale for about two hours b/c to them it looked suspicious. That was cleared up at around 4:30PM and I had a tracking number by about 5:30PM. It arrived down to me in FL three days after the order.

I pretty much assume that unless I receive a DOA unit, I am going to be dealing with the manufacturer directly for any warranty issues.

I got my XTi @ Best Buy using a circuit city flyer, Circuit City had a $190 off if you bought the XTi w/ kit lense, and the 70-300 (non-IS), it made it like 934 plus tax. I got reward zone points for it too (more $$$ later), so it worked out well for me. Plus I didn't have to wait for it to be shipped :) I'm not a huge fan of the 70-300, but it is "good enough" for right now, and I've used it with a tripod most of the time.

Couple of DW questions

1) When going to Disneyworld, what focal lens do you use most?

I am thinging of bringing my 28-135 IS and 20mm/2.8 (wide) & 50mm/1.8 (Low light). I just don't know if that will cover it all? I also have the lens kit and the 70-200 F/4, but that is kind of big to lug around & I think Disney is set for wider lens more (except Anaimal Kingdom).

2) How many pics do people shoot per day on average? So I know how many cards to bring)

3) What ride will not allow you to bring the camera on with you? I heard rock N roller coaster was one.

Thanks

As is the case with most comparisons, it's a judgment call. What's important to you?

Here are the differences that I am aware of:

1) Rebel XTi 10mp vs 8mp for the 30D
2) Rebel XTi is $700 vs $1100 for the 30D
3) Rebel XTi is 19.6 oz vs 27.7 oz for the 30D
4) Rebel XTi is smaller
5) 30D has a larger and brighter viewfinder
6) Rebel XTi shoots 3fps vs 5fps for the 30D
7) 30D has more switches/dials which makes it quicker to operate
8) 30D is more rugged
9) Rebel XTi uses cheap IR remote, 30D does not
10) 30D has spot meter
11) XTi has anti-dust system
12) 30D has 2nd LCD
13) XTi max shutter speed is 1/4000 vs 1/8000 for the 30D
14) Battery life is longer on 30D
15) 30D has marginally useful 3200 ISO while XTi does not

I haven't seen a comparison of image quality, so I could only speculate on that. Do you want to pay $400 more for a sturdier, larger, more efficient camera or save the money and get a smaller, lighter, simpler camera?
