Canon 400D Advice

i'm trying to get advice as i've posted before about taking photos with my Canon 400d with Tamron 18-200mm lens, esp christmas trees and spec christmas baubles. apart from the DIS, are there websites that offer such good help?

I've always struggled with tree lights and getting the aperture, fl etc right when taking the photos. This is what I did last year:
