We recently purchased this camera and now want a new lens up to a 300mm, but, since is the first digital SLR we have owned we are unsure about lenses.

Do you need a lens with an image stabilizer? If so, why? and if not, why?

The need of IS depends on what the primary use will be, for sports no it is not needed unless you want to have blurry subjects(players). If you will be shooting primarily subjects that are standing still in less than perfect lighting without a tripod, IS is for you. If you have trouble holding the camera still, IS "may" help.

My take on this issue is you don't NEED it but it is very nice to have if you can afford it. Telephoto lenses are more susceptible to image blur due to camera shake the longer the focal length becomes. Therefore if you have your zoom set at 300mm it will be more likely you will end up with blurry photos if you are hand-holding the camera or have it on a very light tripod than if the zoom is set to 70mm. Image stabilizers will allow you to get pictures you may not be able to capture well otherwise by allowing a slower shutter speed to be used in darker situations or by controlling unintended movement while panning in action shots. But you don't NEED it if you are OK with the occasional blurry picture or have the ability to use a tripod or other support with it.

I love my two lenses with IS. The canon 70-300 with the dual mode IS and the 28-135 with the older IS version. But if I recall correctly those two are about $1100 total.

i have the 28-135 IS and love it. i've been able to take some shot that i know i would have missed( ie a butterfly at 135mm) or been blurry for sure.. i do have some hand tremor problems but it has made a world of difference for me. it obviously doesn't stop the action of a subject but cuts any blur from you moving the camera. my old lens were garbage but this one is great..and when i find enough couch change i'm getting the 70-300 IS ( and cheap as i am that is saying something )

I am not sure why DH wants it, I would like to buy it for him for Christmas but was unsure if it was an extreme want or a need, since they are so expensive. But, I guess since the actual camera ended up costing us about $100 bucks out of pocket the lense might be in the works!
