Ok, I'll admit to being a newbie and pretty cluefree when it comes to established memes here on the DIS. I searched and found no answers to my question, so I thought I'd ask.

What's with the can of corn comments? :confused3

Way back (at least 10 years ago) there was a thread asking about the strangest thing you had ever seen at Disney World. One of them was a family sitting in front of City Hall in the Magic Kingdom eating canned corn.

Many moons ago...in the early days of the DIS...someone made a simple post that they witnessed someone sitting on the curb on Main Street in the MK, eating corn out of the can.

That post, and the following remarks took on a life of their own...and has become a treasured piece of the DISboards lore.

I've searched for the OP a time or two, but never persisted long enough to find it...if it still exists.

What's so strange about eating corn out of a can on Main Street? Now if you said dog food...;)

I don't know- maybe it was the context but I laughed so hard I was crying. a true DIS classic for sure! Surely someone has it saved and can repost.

No worries, OP, I am not new but this is the first I have heard about this family eating corn out of a can on Main Street. Wow, that is odd though … I love when the DIS and threads take on a life of their own … so wished I had seen it. ::yes::

Well, most people when eating canned veggies DO heat them first and eat them off of a plate, so the idea of just popping the top on a cold can of corn and diggin' in while sitting on a bench in front of City Hall looked a bit ... unusual, shall we say? Also, canned corn is fairly cheap, and this was a large family that was sharing a can and passing it from person to person, so that added to the perception of frugality gone 'round the bend.

I seem to remember that there was a fair amount of speculation that the family in question might be tourists from somewhere overseas -- apparently somewhere where room-temp canned corn is unusual and considered a real treat.

Thanks for the replies- I thought maybe someone suggested that they bring corn in the park to save some money, and knowing how excitable some folk are, a war erupted. Over canned corn. popcorn::

Although I'm the only DISer, anyone in my family could have answered this question. They know why it's on our WDW packing list!:rotfl:

I've made several attempts through the ears to propagate the corn post, but my efforts never took root...and I did not want the OP to think I was stalking them....but did want to prove to the doubters that there was a kernel of truth to this story...but, amaizeingly, I never located the OP...shucks...

:rolleyes1

did they bring there crockpot to heat it in? or there coffee pot?

We all KNOW that crockpots are for cooking chili in our rooms at the All Stars :lmao:

This has happened...I am sure of it ;)

:rotfl:Maybe they were Icelandic :rotfl:
We eat our canned corn at room temperature (some people heat it). We don´t eat it often but when we do, it´s usually w. some of our best meals. My kids love canned corn :goodvibes
We wouldn´t ever eat it as a meal, let alone one can for all of us. But we do sometimes share a can with some grilled meat and potatoes when we´re camping for example.

Were they from the dis old fogies thread? You would be able to tell because it would be a can of creamed corn, just sayin! ;)

Back in the day, it was one of those threads that just TOOK OFF.

A fairly mundane topic just caught on fire and became a DIS classic.

I can't remember it all, but I think what bascially happened was that everyone started chiming in with their ideas of stuff to eat from a can at Disney World, and it just got funnier and funnier.

The CB was a lot smaller then, and we all seemed to "know" each other (as much as you can know someone from an Internet message board), which also helped it become a classic.

This was my favorite DIS thread ever... from the canned corn, the great dwarf battle as they defended Snow White (as told by WillyJ), the wheelchair that flew down the hill and ended in the Rivers of America (the person ended up okay), plus so many odd and embarrassing stories. Pages and pages of funny stories. It was great. Although people have tried to resurrect the subject, those threads have never quite met that one thread.

Along with this, my favorite series of thread (or was it one long trip report?) was that by Dixie Amos.

These threads literally had me gasping for air they were so funny. :lmao:
