I am not where I can get to my members book. What is the cancellation policy for DVC?
Thanks

If you are 31 days or more from check-in, you can cancel and the points become available to re-use. If you banked or borrowed any points for the reservation, they have to be used the end of that Use Year (they can't be put back).

If you cancel 30 days or less, the points go into a "Holding Account". You can use them to make reservations 60 days or less from when you plan to travel and the points can't be banked.

If you just don't arrive on check-in day, all the points for the reservation are forfeited.

The policies for non-DVC options vary. In all those cases, the points can only be re-used to make other non-DVC trips.

The only slight addition I'd make to Pam's excellent coverage of the issue is that if you cancel, the original banking windows apply. So you may or may not be able to bank points that are current use year, depending on when you are in reference to the end of your use year.

Thanks for the help. I was at work and could not get into the web site without my pin number.

Just to add, if something comes up (bad travel weather, family or work emergency, etc.) and you know you will not make it on your check-in day and you are already into the 30-day period prior to the start of your reservation, call member services and adjust your arrival day so you do not lose the rest of your reservation. In January, we were supposed to start a combined BWV-VB stay (4 nights at each) on Saturday. On Friday, a family emergency came up and we had to change our departure plans to late Monday afternoon. I was able to call MS and cancel the first two nights of our BWV stay. The points for these two nights went into the 60-day holding account. Fortunately, I was also able to switch two nights of our VB stay from cash at the 25% member discount to points, using (most of) the points in the holding account. If MS had not been open, I would have at least notified the resort that I would be arriving a day (or two in this case) late so as not to lose both the reservation and the rest of the points.

Good point, Ralph. The most important thing is to make contact if you are not going to show up. The resort phone number is on the confirmation. They can usually work something out.

Do you know if they still offer the "once in a lifetime, I really messed up, return of your points without penalties?

I think that's always been pretty much on a case-by-case basis. If you have a problem, it doesn't hurt to ask whether they can work something out. With DVC continuing to grow in size, I'm not sure how much flexibility they have but I'm sure they try to work out problems.
