I think I have our hotel choice narrowed to Candycane or Ramada Maingate.

I would love to hear anyone opinion, plusses or minuses. I am also open to other hotel suggestions.

Things that are important to us are,
most important-- cleanliness, close proximity to dining options, nice pool area, and room size
less important-- walking distance, balcony
even less important (but a nice bonus)-- free breakfast, free wifi and free parking

previously we have stayed at Hojo and DLH. Hojo- like room size and balcony, found it a bit far from dining options, walk was OK. Loved DLH and would choose it again if the budget allowed--loved the resort atmosphere and pool area

also our trip will be me, DH DS 12 and DD 10

I have stayed at both and hands down Candy Cane Inn is our favorite. We have stayed there over 10 times. Stayed at Ramada once and will not likely return.
CCI wins for cleanliness. Never had a single issue. Ramada we found a bug (not a bed bug) on our bed and it just felt clean enough but not great.
I think dining options are a draw. Neither are super close or far from the locations on Harbor. Slight advantage to Ramada maybe for being on the same side of the street as Dennys ect...
Neither have huge pools but CCI has a charming pool area. Both are in the middle of the parking lot but CCI has more plants and such, you don't feel like you are in the parking lot. Both seem clean.
Walking distance is about the same. CCI also offers a free shuttle to and from which is fabulous after a long day!
Rooms felt about the same size. 5 of us do just fine in a standard room at either place.
No balconies at either location.
Both offer free breakfast. CCI has a much nicer breakfast area and we think a much better selection. I thought Ramada had a gross selection and the closet like room was crammed with people and that really grossed me out!
Both have free parking and we never had trouble parking at either property.
I think they both have free WiFi but most places on Harbor seem to have poor quality WiFi!

My vote is for the Ramada Maingate. I have stayed there every year, twice a year for approximately 25 years. One of the main reason is the pool. It has been a great pool for our kids and now grandkids. The kids can walk right into the pool. The level goes down to inches. There are also plenty to eat around there. Tony Roma and Denny's are close. They have redone all their rooms and added a new addition. No shuttle but easy walking, closer than Candy Cane. They do have a continental breakfast, don't eat there much but it's OK. Hope that helps.

Another vote for candy cane inn. We've stayed there several times and love it.

We just got home from the Tropicana.
We liked it. The rooms were very clean and in decent shape. Beds and blankets and pillows were very comfy.
The wifi worked good.
The maid left us extra towels when we left a note asking for some.
Pool was clean and good. In the Parking Lot, but still decent.
The Market Cove store was great. Slightly expensive, but had yummy muffins and snacks. The Pizza Place had really good pizza too!
Very close to the Park entrance. Very close to McDonalds, Ihop, Tony Romas and Dennys too.
We checked in early, at noon. Our room wasn't ready, but they let us store our luggage in a locked room, so we could go to the parks. (We used the bathroom to change and fix ourselves up!)
Valet Parking for $10 a day was totally worth it. They were quick and efficient.
We have stayed at a few on Harbour, and I would rate them
1. Tropicana
2. Camelot
3. Desert Inn

In a new superior room at ramada in the new building? If a new room then Ramada, if not a new room then CCI. We love both. And stay where ever is cheapest :)

yes, if at the Ramada, it would most likely in a new room. Do you feel the properties-pool, walking distance, breakfast, etc are all equal? Giving Ramada a leg up only in the new rooms?

Are the Ramada rooms larger than the CCI rooms?

Are the Ramada rooms larger than the CCI rooms?

I have only stayed at the smallest/cheapest rooms at the CCI and yes, the new superior rooms at the Ramada are larger. I cannot say for the larger rooms at CCI how they would compare. The new rooms at the Ramada have two sinks separate from the tub and toilet, which made getting ready quicker and easier.

Out of all of our stays, we have never used the pool at either. I know the Ramada pool is larger. It has zero entry and it has some splash area stuff for the kids. We plan on using it July 20 on our arrival day. The pool at the CCI looked really nice too, just a bit smaller.

Walking distance, Ramada is closer, but CCI is nice because you don't have to cross Harbor. And CCI has a free shuttle if you needed it.

Breakfast are not equal at all! CCI wins hands down! Tons more choices at CCI and nicely presented too. Ramada only has limited choices and is in a tiny room next to the pool. We rarely eat the breakfast at Ramada.

Both have free parking and wi-fi I believe. I haven't stayed at Ramada since October 2013, but I've been reading they are doing construction on all the older buildings to match the new building facade. I have read parking is tighter than normal. I voiced a concern to the manager who helped me book and she said they will always find a spot for you and they've never had to park anyone off site. But I'm still a bit worried about that. People are complaining about construction noise during the day, but we rarely come back for breaks. But that is something you will want to consider. I'm hoping being in the new building, the noise will be further away from us. We will see! I can come back and let you know after our stay =)

Also, CCI has much prettier grounds than the Ramada. Ramada has a little store on property. CCI is next to 7-11.

Hope that helps you!

Does anyone know if there is much a difference in room size between the new rooms at Ramada and the superior rooms at CCI?

CCI website lists premium room as 350 sq ft and deluxe as 308 sq ft.

Ramada doesn't list superior room sq ft. I'm guessing here but the 3 room suite is 950 and the 2 room is 630. Only difference is an extra sleeping room. So I would guess the sq ft to be 320 for the superior room. I could be wrong. Maybe call and ask?
