This will be our first ever trip to Disneyland and I want to book a safe hotel that is clean. I will take any advice anyone has for first timers going to Disneyland

Either would fit the bill. Between the two it's mostly motel vs hotel.

In the red lion it's a little upscale. It is also further, you could walk but more likely would like to walk in the Toy Story lot near it and take the Disney shuttle to the parks. It has free breakfast for kids.

The Candy Cane is a very nice motel. It is about 9 minutes walking, roughly the same distance as the redlion to toy story lot. It offers a basic, but free breakfast. Even though quite redundant since the walk is easy it has a private shuttle.

If you found these names through DL.com in thier good nieghbor list, you may not get the best rate going through diney.

Also have you seen the DLR guide for WDW vets? Part 11 talks about hotels for a DLR point of view.

Well, I've never stayed at the Red Lion, but we are returning to CCI this summer for our 3rd stay. You can see my review with pics in my sig. CCI is closer and personally I wouldn't care to walk further than that. It is safe and we walk back late at night. But the further down you keep walking at night, the less people there are. I haven't gone down past the little shops by CCI so I can't say what it is like to walk to Red Lion, but there do seem to be less people that way from what I have seen.

We love CCI for the easy walk, the in room fridge, the free safe, the free breakfast, and the free shuttle, oh, and the free parking.

On the con side. The rooms are a tad small. We get the deluxe size with our teen boys and we fit, but the beds are up against both walls. Also, sorry to say, the coffee is terrible. :lmao: The wifi is free but can be a little spotty. Fortunately, for us, it isn't a priority. We get out a few emails or check a web page or two.

Is Parking at DL a problem? Thank you for that link I will be checking it out in detail. I have been to WDW 15 plus times, but this is our first to DL and I am nervous

Thank you for your reviews they are great!:flower3: The embassy suites look nice too. I don't think I am willing to pay for parking  This seems like a trend and I am not to fond of it

You know that Red Lion charges for parking, don't you?

I've never stayed at CCI so can't compare it to Red Lion, but we've stayed at Red Lion multiple times and think it's a nice hotel. It's been renovated within the past 2 years, so everything is newer and clean. The rooms have the white duvet comforters (none of those bright or floral print ones) flat screen TV's and a modern look. The pool area is very nice, especially in the evening, as they have fire pits and nice comfy chairs to sit by them in, and the bar is right there, so you can grab a drink and relax. They have free internet. They have a breakfast buffet with hot items, like eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, etc that's $10 for adults and kids eat free. And their rooms are pretty sound proof. Last time we stayed there, there was a cheerleading competition and the girls were running up and down the halls yelling and practicing. I was so nervous about being able to sleep, as I hear everything, but once we closed the door, I didn't hear a thing and was never woken up by them.

The cons for us are that there is no spa, they charge around $12/day to park and it's a bit far to walk. But the ART shuttle stops right in front of the hotel, so we take that. It comes every 15-20 mins and IMO is much easier than driving and parking in the Disneyland garage.

Parking isn't a problem any more than at WDW. It takes time, it costs money.

That's why many people prefer to stay at hotels you can walk from.
