Cancelling within 30 days - help me understand please.

Could someone explain (in plain English - maybe small words) what would happen if we cancelled out March 27th DVC reservation. We used both 2020 and 2021 use year points (year re-sets in August). I don't expect we will visit before September or December 2021 (so 2021 use year).

Is there any way to push all of those points into my 2021 use year or am I going to lose them?

My husband and I are not terribly comfortable with going to WDW next month after seeing photos of poor social distancing in many locations. We are also now expecting our daughter's school to come down heavy on anyone who travels over spring break.

Thanks for the help and I apologize if I'm being dense. I'm just having trouble understanding my options and I know the people here are on top of it!

Points are currently not being put into holding if you cancel inside of 31 days. With an August UY, you have a banking deadline of March 31. If the 2020 points in this reservation are all from your 2020 allotment and not banked from 2019, you can bank those points into 2021 for use between Aug. 1, 2021 and July 31, 2022.

You can cancel the reservation now without penalty. Holding is currently waived. You can bank the returned 2020 points - deadline to do that is March 31). Your points that were borrowed from 2021 will be auto-returned to the 2021 use year. This can take up to 7 days, but you can call MS to have it done sooner if you need to use those points for a reservation.

The temporary policy to waive holding and return borrowed points expires on April 30, 2021.

Yes. The current cancellation policy is very generous. Your 2020 points can be banked into 2021 and any borrowed 2021 points will eventually be returned to the 2021 UY.

As for the tickets, they won't lose their value. But they will disappear from MDE after their expiration date. Keep a record of your ticket number. You can call WDW ticketing to have the date changed when you can finally visit.. You will have to pay any difference in price.

Adding: though it does not affect your cancellation of the March reservation, be aware the applicable covid rules will expire end of Apri. Beginning May 1, the 30 day holding rule will be back in place and any borrowed points coming out a cancelled reservation will not be sent back to their original use year. What will continue after April 30 is the rule limiting borrowing to 50% of total contract points.

Personally if I knew I was going to cancel I’d do it immediately. The current policy of waiving the holding period and relaxed banking/borrowing is temporary & was in reaction to WDW/DL closing down (which I am painfully aware of since my vacation last spring was suddenly canceled by them when they shut down completely ) - I’d be afraid that they’d revert to the normal rules sooner, so I wouldn’t risk waiting till the last minute.

Thanks, I saw that thread - but I am a bit risk averse given the suddenness of the changes last spring lol.

Just want to mention that I modified a series of reservations this week. I had 6 nights and we decided to just do four nights.

In the reservation I had 2019, 2020 and 2021 points. The 6 nights had been gathered 1 night at a time, so I was able to use the modify function to 'sort out' my points.

I had 25 points from the 2021 use year. 12 of those points went back during the modification process and 13 of them showed as 2020 points that were not bankable.

Eventually I got on the phone and MS returned them for me. They also combined the remaining nights into one reservation.

What surprised me was that the 12 points were actually auto returned and the other 13 stayed until I got help from MS. I knew they could be put back. I just didn't realize that it might happen during my own attempts at cancelation and reorganization of my points.
