Cancelling reservations with borrowed points

I am reading conflicting information on if I borrow points and wind up cancelling the reservation. Will those points return to the original use year or have to be used within the use year they were booked in? i would cancel more than thirty one days out if I had to cancel. I want to book Feb break before nothing at all is available but I am not 100% sure we can go yet. Thanks in advance.

If you borrowed points to the current use year, that's where they will remain and you'll have to use them before it ends or they'll expire. They don't get "un-borrowed" when you cancel.

Banking and borrowing are FINAL transactions.

When you move the pts with banking or borrowing, you cannot move the points again. They will expire if not used by the end of their new year (you have to complete a stay, not just book a stay by the end of that UY.)

They made some exceptions during the Pandemic but don't count on that happening again.

There was a period of time when MS was returning borrowed points to their original UY but that courtesy ended a while ago. If you borrow points now, they will stay in the UY they are borrowed into.

This makes a lot of sense. Thank you! I think that’s why I was finding conflicting information when I googled it because I was getting certain responses from that time period which probably only related to cancellations when resorts were closed and maybe when they first reopened. I thought it would stay in the current use year. That’s a bummer.
