cancelling banked points reservation

Here is my scenario- I have two nights in a Studio at GCV book for October. I am a teacher and we are only allowed to take 2 Fridays off a year, so I might be cancelling the first (Fri) night, but I haven't decided yet. That reservation was made using banked 2011 points.

I am about (hopefully) to make a reservation for GCV for December for a 2BR (or 1BR if I can get it, but right now it is sold out). That would be made using mostly 2012 points and my last remaining 8 banked 2011 points.

My question is, if I cancel that Friday night at a later date, will those points still be allocated to 2011, and therefore subject to being lost at the end of this UY? If so, should I do so today to avoid this before booking the 2BR tomorrow. Or, if I cancel that night at a later time, can the points be reallocated to the 2BR reservation after it is made?

Banked points stay in the year you banked into.

If you cancel 31 days out, they stay were they were banked. Less than 30 days out and they go into holding account.

I will be canceling more than 30 days out, so that isn't an issue. So, I would lose them at the end of the UY, even though I am using more points for a future reservation?
Oct stay- 48 pts (all banked 2011 points)- probably canceling 24 of them
Dec stay- 169 pts (8 2011 pts, 161 2012 points)

I guess my question is if/when I cancel the Friday in October, can MS change the point usage of the December stay to use 32 2011 points and 137 2012 points?

I am 75% sure I will be canceling that night, but being that GCV is so hard to book, I don't want to give it up until I am totally sure. I might fly in after work on Friday or I may decide to risk it and take that Friday off and just hope I am never sick on a Friday for the rest of the school year!

Points returned from a cancellation won't automatically be reallocated to a reservation made before the cancellation. If you cancel the Fri nite and want those points applied towards another reservation, you will need to make that specific request.

There is also a possibility that the banked points would not be reallocated depending on your Use Year, if they are from a different resort, if the new reservation was made during the 11 month priority.

If they are banked points from GCV, the new reservation is at GCV or reserved within 7 months and December is still within the Use Year into which they were banked, then you should be fine.
