Cancelling AOL - Huge fight with AOL Customer Service

Ditto to all of the above. It came pre-installed on DH's laptop. I begged him to delete it at once, but no-he just HAD to try to "free" trial. After a few months of charges to our credit card after he thought he had "cancelled," he realized I knew what I was talking about. :p

I could have written your post, Hillbeans.

We cancelled AOL a few months ago too. They were VERY difficult to deal with. They were very persistent, despite our repeated requests to disconnect our service.

It was a very bad experience.

Thanks for the "heads-up". We are getting ready to cancel and at least now we have been forewarned!!!!!!

I'm almost embarassed how loud I got with this woman on the phone but I just keep thinking about how many times, over and over, I asked nicely to cancel my service and all she kept doing was trying to upsell me more services.

What a nightmare. Good luck.

They have to be used to it by now....(note to self: don't take AOL customer service rep job).

I wasn't yelling -- but I was bad. Every time the guy tried to talk I was saying stuff like, "no.....wait......stop right now", interupting him every 5 sec.

I am filing all of this away for the day I can cancel AOL. We have a cable modem but still have AOL because when you go to DH's company website, the "customer feedback/questions" link goes to his AOL screen name. Since he pays for my car insurance I guess I can pay for his AOL.
But the day he upgrades his website or sells the company...bye bye AOL!

Thanks for the warning about how difficult AOL can be. We're getting ready to cancel AOL soon and at least now I know what I'll probably have to deal with.

I cancelled my AOL two days ago and it was actually a pleasant experience. I had a lady named Diana who didn't try to upsell anything or push the free months.

OMG......I just cancelled my AOL account. What a nightmare that was. They don't take no for an answer. I am a very mild mannered personality, and after saying to cancel it around 10 times I started screaming at this person. What is with them?? How many times should you have to ask politely to cancel service before you get this awful treatment on the phone??

Has this happened to anyone else? I got Cable Modem, and after the terrible treatment on the phone by these AOL people, i'd never ever get AOL again.
The same thing happened to me! What is the deal? The guy just kept on and on with me saying the whole time, "Just cancel it!"

We actually joke about "A O Hell" at work because we've heard people here screaming on the phone with them to cancel. I'm so glad I never got AOL!

LOL...I never got on the hook for AOL. Just couldnt stand them to begin with. I share in your pain though...

Ever try canceling a cell phone. My god its horrible..new phones, better plans....Then same thing happend with insurance company...

Had been State Farm for 13 years...House/Auto/Other all covered by them. Got a new car in March. Rates were going to go up by 5 bucks a month. No big deal really. I decided to look into progressive. Well progressive didnt get me a lower prince but All State did. I save 850.00 a year on home and auto alone. The same if not better coverage on both. State Farm lady pleaded with me not to go. I said match thier rates and Ill stay. She said she couldnt and then I said goodbye.

My company is affiliated with AOL. I *could* have AOL for free. I hate it so much I chose not to use it but to get a cable hook up instead.

I think that speaks words about what I think of AOL.

Reading this thread actually cracks me up because if there is ONE company that I could chose to personally send into bankruptcy or some sort of financial ruin it's AOL. Actually I had Compuserve whish is part of AOL somehow. And I never got a free trial but I made the horrible mistake of signing a contract for a free $400.00 certificate at Circuit City. DON'T EVER EVER DO THIS!!

Honestly, I would love to stop every person I know and tell them not to deal with AOL and Compuserve!

Three years into our 4 year contract they drop all local phone numbers to access the internet in our area. So our choice was to dial the 800 number (for a fee) or dial long number and get a huge long-distance bill. I wanted out of my contract...sure, they said if I paid back the money I got from the gift certificate! OK with only one year left we can't owe that much...try over $200! I was sooo angry. I was terrible to the AOL woman. She told me to stop screaming I said, "I'm not screaming. You want to hear screaming. THIS IS SCREAMING!!!

She hung up on me. I don't blame her.

I found that the only feasible thing to do was to find another dial up and pay the rest of my contract to AOL. The day my contract expired I called and cancelled. When he started his spiel I said, "I filed a complaint with the Better Business on you. You took enough of my money in exchange for NOTHING, you will not get any more. Now cancel my account."

Didn't have a problem cancelling after that. But I hate AOL and Compuserve.

I find it best to be plain old forceful and tell them I want to cancel "NO QUESTIONS ASKED".

I just cancelled AOL and that is exactley what I told them. When they started to ask me about lower price plans, I simply said I am not interested in anything else Just cancel me.

It may sound harsh, but it worked. Within just a couple minutes I had my confirmation number for cancellation.

Now we shall see if they keep billing me even though I have cancelled.
