Cancelling and Re-booking at 7 Month Window???

I'm still learning the ins and outs of DVC ownership and I keep seeing mention of cancelling an existing reservation and immediately booking something else at the 7 month window. Can some one explain the benefit of doing this or the mindset behind it?

It's done to be able to stay at a different resort than your home resort. Book something at your home resort at 11 months to make sure you have something and then switch elsewhere if there is something available that interests you at 7 months.

If you have enough points to keep the original reservation AND book the new one, just do it. Then once you have both cancel the original. Many on this site don't have enough points to do that, so they cancel and book new. This does tend to be a bit risky as the desired room may disappear in the time it takes to get back and secure it. At which point you may end up without any reservation. Good luck.

Ahh, so it's basically just a means to "guarantee" something at your home resort at the 11 month window, but if there's actually someplace you'd rather stay during that trip you try to get it at 7 months and cancel the 11 month booking. I think I get it now. I thought maybe by having an existing reservation it gave you more leverage to get a reservation at 7 months, but didn't see how that worked.

If you absolutely don't want to stay at your home resort, then just wait for the 7 month window to try to book something.

But at certain times of year, you definitely risk being shut out.
