Cancelling a Trip and Losing Money?

I was a bit curious about this and now there is a chance it may happen to one of our party members.

We have a trip for 4 planned on May 18-26. My Fiancee's parents and us will be be there together. We have a package and dining plan purchased.

Now I hear that my Future FIL may be getting a management position at his work. This would mean that he has to attend a 16 week training course. he wont know until mid april whether he gets this and by that time, cancelling his portion will cost anywhere from 50-100 dollars plus the cost of the plane ticket.

His vacation was approved by his work when he was at his old position but if he gets this manager position he will not be able to go on vacation. Has anyone ever had a similar situation and what happens to the money lost? Should the company reimburse for this since the vacation was approved before we made any arrangements?

Any thoughts

I think he would just be out the money and his company should not be responsible for the $$. Are they making him take the management position? He could stay at the position he is currently in and go on vacation.

Often, the destination (WDW) will be very generous and offer to rebook with either minimal or no up-charge. That would be the first thing to check. Beyond that, I wouldn't go down the path of pursuing the company for compensation -- your FIL is the one deciding to accept the promotion, and so should do so factoring in whether it is worth losing the money spend on the vacation. (I would guess, it most surely is.)

We are facing the possiblity of one of our party being sent to Iraq. He is active military. The travel insurance does not cover this!! We were told that cancellation with Disney 45 days out =full refund. 6 days -45 days a $100 penalty and 1-5 days out $200 penalty. As for airfare, Southwest will credit the cost of the flight and it has to be used with in a year. I pray that our whole group can go but if he is deployed I plan on taking it up with Disney. How un American is that?

Depending on the airline, you can usually cancel your tickets and apply the value, minus a "change fee" of up to $100, on a future ticket - to be used within one year of the original booking. So at the most, he would be out $100 to WDW for the package and $100 for airfare. Not a big loss.

The possibility of getting deployed has to be in the back of one's mind when you're in the military and planning a vacation. Disney may work with you on this, and they may not...but it is within their right to charge a fee if you have to cancel.

I had to cancel the night before we were to arrive (family medical emergency) and lost a couple hundred with the airlines.

But Disney didn't charge me a penny. They cxld hotel reservation and all my ADRs (PSs at the time) and called back to let me know they'd done it. They even said, "I hope your father gets better."

They just couldn't have been nicer about it.
