Cancelling a room reservation using points

Please excuse my ignorance. Having been a DVC owner for 15 years, I am still not up to par on certain rules.
We prefer to visit Disney during the Christmas holidays. This usually requires making reservations at BRV at the 11 month mark. My plan is to book 7 nights in a studio for my wife and myself from Dec 7-14, 2023. Now my dilemma.
During the pandemic, we had planned two different family trips (9 people) to Hawaii that were cancelled. I would like to do a Feb 2024 trip but at this moment it is unsure wher my children and there spouses can arrange time off work etc. We will only be taking the one trip, either WDW or Hawaii.
If I book my seven nights at BRV and then come July my children decide that they can go to Hawaii, what are the implications of my points if I cancel the BRV points? Would I be able to use the points for AulanI for Feb 2024.

If you cancel your reservation at least 31 days before your check-in date, your points return to normal status in that use year. Any Borrowed ponts can not be banked back into their original use year. Any banked or borrowed points remain in the use year to which they were banked or borrowed, as banking and borrowing are final transactions.

As to whether you can bank those released current points, that will depend upon your use year months and the banking deadline associated with it.

If you cancel 30 days or less from check-in all the points go into holding status, and can only be used to make reservation for arrival dates 60s days or less from time of booking.

If you cancel on day of arrival, points are considered used and are lost.

Yes, September 2023 points can be used for a February 2024 trip. So book your BRV reservation at 11 months, then if in July your kids are able to plan Aulani in February, cancel BRV and book AUL - you'll be fine.
