Cancelled Flight?

We are flying out of MKE with Midwest Air Sept. 11-17th. I've never had a flight delayed, cancelled, etc. I'm worried since we're going during hurricane season. What happens if your flight gets cancelled or delayed. Are the airlines good about taking care of you. Anyone have experience with this especially with Midwest Air? If my flights cancelled, I'm not going to be out of $ and have to rebook am I? Sorry for the silly questions! TIA!

If the flights are cancelled for weather related issues they will put you on the next available flight with seats. That could take a couple days depending on how full they are.

Generally you can't get your money back for weather related cancellations, but it's not totally unheard of.

Sometimes other carriers will accept the ticket for your cancelled flight on their planes, it depends on their agreement with your carrier, but if tere's a hurricane pretty much all carriers will be in the same boat, and will assist their passengers first.

If the delay is weather related they will not provide accomodations or food vouchers.

When the storm is imminent most airlines will waive all restrictions on your tickets and let you fly standby if you want to try to get to MCO before the storm or try to leave Orlando before it hits. They will frequently let you re-schedule your trip, over a particular time frame and even refund non-refundable tickets.

Check your airlines website. They like to minimize the number of people that have to be accommodated when the flights get canceled.

Anne is right, they don't owe you any compensation for weather related problems. If you elect to continue with your vacation you're responsible for any extra nights you have to stay.

SW, and I assume other airlines, ran extra flights to get their pax out of MCO.

If you are able to and are interested in standing by early to beat a storm, go right to the airport and try.

The airline might tell you over the phone they won't let you stand by, but if you actually show up, ready to fly, there is a good chance they will put you on the earlier flight at no extra charge, if a storm threatens.

THe more people allowed to fly out early, the fewer people have to be accommodated if a cancellation does occur.

For whatever it is worth, should the airline refuse to put you at no extra charge on the earlier flight you showed up for, that flight departs with empty seats, and then your scheduled flight is cancelled for the reason you attempted the earlier standby, weather included, then the airline did not use its best efforts to transport you.
