I am not a DVC member, but I am interested in renting points. Can anyone tell me about cancellation? If we had to cancel out at the last minute, would we lose the whole amount or a one night deposit or what? Is this up to the member that I'm renting from? We've been to Disney many times, and we've never cancelled. But there's always a chance of a family emergency. Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome aboard!

The Owner who chooses to rent sets their own cancellation policy. Typically (but not always) it is a no cancellation policy.

This is because the points used to make your reservation may have been borrowed or banked, or will expire before a 'replacement' reservation may be set up (or there may be no other dates available, for example this December is fully sold out), or if you cancel less than 31 days prior to your trip, the DVC points become holding points, which are severely limited in use and thus value. Or, if you shorten your vacation, or cancel the day of arrival, the points are forfeit. These are DVC's rules, the Owner has no options here.

Renting is not for everyone, for a good discount you give up flexability, and control.

I would suggest you get a written contract from your Owner.

Even though there are risks to you (and the Owner as well) in renting, there are no horror stories of ripped off renters that I can find here on the DIS.

Good luck with your vacation planning!

P.S. You can buy trip insurance to cover those unplanned emergencies!

When I rent, it's non refundable from day one and I believe most fall into that mode.

Some members will let you reschedule within the limits of the points used to make the reservation. I've not heard of any who will allow refunds.

It's a very good idea to ask about this before any money changes hands. Also good to have somethingin writing from the member so both parties understand the terms.

Good luck!

The member has full control over the reservation until the moment you check in. You have no control, you cannot call to make requests or changes (only the member can do that).
