I'm not seeing the cause-and-effect here. Why does his deployment mean you'd have to cancel? I don't think that would be a good enough reason to make an exception. The points are ours, not my s-in-law's. We don't want to cancel, because we aren't even sure he'll be deployed. He's in for another 5 years, so we don't want to put life on hold that long. Just was curious how Disney might handle this. We've never canceled before..IF he gets deployed, and we have to cancel, maybe they'll let us slide this one time? Thank you for all the replies.
Because I'll have 2 studios (instead of 1) if he can still go. If he can't go, I'd need to cancel one of them.I'm not seeing the cause-and-effect here. Why does his deployment mean you'd have to cancel? I don't think that would be a good enough reason to make an exception.
Okay, I think you left that part out of the OP and we all made some assumptions. I didn't realize we were talking about cancelling one of two reservations, but rather thought we were talking about cancelling everyone's reservation. I figure that was part of @BillPA's point about the son being the owner. If the reservation is in the son's name and he's deployed and can't go, I bet they'll work with you to cancel the one room. Or, you could purchase trip insurance.Because I'll have 2 studios (instead of 1) if he can still go. If he can't go, I'd need to cancel one of them.
Why don't you call MS and ask them if you can't get a definitive answer here. They will know for sure and no more wondering. You could email or chat them.

I suspect the official DVC answer would be "that's what trip insurance is for." I wouldn't depend on magic in this case, there are lots of military families that own DVC, and if they start refunding points for deployment as a policy, the system will break since those points will get "used" twice. The rules on holding points and banking and borrowing are there so everyone has the opportunity to use their points.
Actually with what Disney does for the Military I don't think there would be a problem. IMO I think it will be fine. Points will not be used twice, that is ludicris, and I for one don't care if there is one exception or 100 exceptions made for the Military.
