Canceling Southwest card?

I signed up for the Southwest credit card last year, and got the 50,000 points. I just got billed $99 for the annual renewal fee and am thinking I should cancel the card. I buy 4 - 6 tickets a year on SW, and am thinking that the benefits at this point are not worth the cost.

I assume that if I cancel, I don't lose any points I already have . . . any other reason not to cancel?

How many points do you get on your anniversary date? I have the card w/ the $69 fee, and I get 3,000 bonus points on my anniversary date. Those are worth $50 (60 points equals one dollar), so the way I see it, I am really only paying $19 for a fee. Based on current usage, I will earn about 14,000 points annually. That plus my bonus 3,000 will get me a free ticket just about anywhere I would be able to go right now for $19, so I plan on keeping mine.

I would hope w/ a higher fee that you would get more than 3,000 points because that's a higher level card than mine.

I thought I read somewhere that you lose any points you have when you cancel the card. It would be great if you retain them. Can anyone confirm this?

You don't lose any RR points if you cancel the card. You only lose the ability to use the points for anything other than flights.

Lisa--Thank you! This is the first time the card has been renewed, and if I knew about anniversary points when I signed up, I definitely had forgotten about them by now. But I just checked the account, and you are correct: 6,000 bonus points. So I guess it does make sense to keep the card after all.

Keeping mine!! Charging all i can on it. All of our family(5) flew round trip for free except early bird signin I paid for. I will have enough again this year. My dh and I both got one last year during the 50,000 deal. Gets me to Disney in 1 1/2 hours nonstop!!

I have only used the Southwest card for Southwest purchases (double points). For our other purchases, I have been using whichever card has a 5% back promotion. It is my intuition that we come out ahead this way, but I probably should do the math--we charge a lot (but pay it off every month).
