Canceled our trip :(

DH owns his own business and we've had a tough summer. He hasn't gotten big projects like he usually does, and we're not getting quick payments on regular maintenance service. So we don't have the extra money we usually do at this time of year, which seems like it's just the economy right now so I'm not going to complain too much because we're still in business and doing okay. Just not padded bank account okay like we usually are in August.

We expected our tax return to arrive by now, 45 days out from the planned trip, but it's not here yet. (We filed with an extension in May, but our *#@$ accountant "forgot" to actually file our return - but didn't forget to cash the check - until we called asking about the return at the end of June. We were told the money would be in our account no later than yesterday. It's not there.)

We don't do debt, so putting it on credit cards isn't an option.

With a heavy heart, I called to cancel our trip this morning because we can't pay the balance. I'm feeling so sad. We were going to go for my little boy's 4th birthday in September. We've been talking about going to meet Mickey Mouse for months. I feel so bad that now we're taking that away. :(

I know it is upsetting, but you are doing the right thing for now, and you will get to Disney another time....... and your little one won't even know or remember that he was going for his 4th birthday and it was cancelled.
It will all work out
:)

I'm sorry you had to cancel!:grouphug: Maybe you can start planning a trip for your son's 5th Birthday! You can look forward to it all year round and do some magical planning!

I too had to cancel our trip for my 30th Birthday. I was upset but then told myself I would go again someday.;)

I'm so sorry that you had to cancel but you are doing the right thing. I've had that sad feeling from cancelling before and it stinks!

We won't be able to go over his 5th birthday as he'll already be in kindergarten then and we don't want to take him out of school. We're talking about a 2010 trip, but it won't be as convenient since we don't want to take him out of school.

We're going to try to do a short So Cal trip this winter, including two days at Disneyland. It will be a lot cheaper, but it's not the World.

Does your school have a fall break? My sister's has a week off early October...another system around here does, too.

Maybe try to take advantage of a few days that you do have off from school and combine with a weekend. Say you have a Thursday and Friday off. Maybe leave Tuesday evening. He'll just miss Wednesday and you could maybe even miss Monday. You'd have 5 nights there.

Or go for his 1/2 birthday.....which would be March?

I had to cancel my planned 30th birthday trip too. It stinks, but at least you have the necessities, which a lot of people cannot say right now.

Do not discount Disneyland. I actually like it better than WDW. The weather is much more tolerable and the crowds are not nearly as bad. Plus, many of the original rides (tiki room, pirates, etc) are better because they are longer or the original versions.

My parents used to take me out clear up through 6th grade. The teachers were fine with it and just gave us the work for me to do so I didn't get behind. We drove so I had lots of time to kill. It would only be 5 days worth of school over an entire school year. JMO

I agree, especially for a young child, I like Disneyland better!!

So sorry you had to cancel your trip. :grouphug: Don't count out a Sept. kindergarten trip. My DD will be in 3rd grade & DS in kindergarten when we take our Sept. trip. I did feel guilty at first--scared that I would give our kids (& their teachers) the impression that school isn't important to our family.

But, I had to get over that. Education is very important to us & we will use the homework given to them to learn throughout our trip. (Not to mention the wealth of knowledge available at EPCOT!!!) The first couple of months is usually review anyway. We have been going through workbooks & reading all summer long so they will be prepared once vacation time gets here.

My heart breaks for you b/c you had to cancel. Now, maybe you'll have an extra year to budget & plan. Best wishes to you & your family!

My mom pulled my brothers and I out of school for a week long WDW trip, we were in 2nd grade, 6th grade and 8th grade. We all did fine. As long as your school allows it I say go for it. At that age they aren't missing that much, it's easy to catch up upon return, or sometimes the teacher can prepare a packet for your child to work on during the trip. That's what our teachers did. We had to work on our packets after we were done at the parks for the day but before we were allowed to go the arcade in the evening. :) Not all teachers are willing or able to do that, but if they do it's a great way to do it.

 I'm so sorry you had to cancel, but remember, you're doing the right and responsible thing. Disney will still be there when your ready to go back!

((HUGS)) I am sorry. I know how you feel, we had a free dining trip booked for October for my ds 8th birthday. We just could not swing the extra money this year so we had to cancel about a month ago. We are still going to be getting some Disney magic however it will be at Disneyland resort as we can drive there and stay off property to save a ton of $$$.
I am sure your son will love meeting Mickey when it is time, just remember you did the responsible thing. I remember last in 2007 when we were checking into POP the lady in line in front of us was stressing and saying how she was going to be paying off her credit card for a long time, it made me that much happier we never charge vacations on credit, if we can not pay cash we have to put it off until we can.

OP do you have a disney visa card?

My DH has his own business also. He was using a Marriot Reward card to accumulate hotel points. Fall of last year, I talked him into switching to a Disney Visa. Anything (both business and personal) that can be charged to that card is. We pay the balance off in full each month. Sometimes depending on the job and household expenses, I am making payment each week to keep an available balance open.

If you can faithfully commit to paying the balance off each month, it is like getting a free vacation. I have to pay these bills each month anyhow, so why not get something back for doing so.

 Boy can I relate, we just cancelled yesterday on our trip that was to start Friday...for DS 15th Bday. DD has some medical stuff going on that prevents us from going at this time. Luckily, DS only knew we were going for a quick weekend, so he is adjusting ( has no idea we were booked at his dream resort) matter of fact, I think he handled it best of us all. When the time is right , it will be a MUCH nicer trip. You won't mind getting that extra Mickey bar treat or popcorn for your little guy. I kind of like the DisneyLand idea, I wish WDW had as many face characters as DL, so cool to interact with.

Sorry you had to cancel! :grouphug: But you sound like a reasonable person making a difficult sound decision, regardless!
As a small business owner myself, I HEAR you! It indeed has been a difficult year and I too am "down" overall as is the main company I contract too. They took a HUGE hit with banks lowering credit limits and limiting access and small businesses are suffering greatly....
Hoping your business does pick up again and wishing you the very best of Success!
In addition, I hope that when you do return to Disney it is an even MORE spectacular visit! :wizard:

Our trip isn't until Nov. 29th, but already I'm feeling like it isn't right to take it. We were just there in Feb. and we really enjoyed it and since then I've been saving all my pennies and money from a garage sale to go back to see WDW decked out for Christmas. I got the free dining and it's a reasonably priced trip, but it seems like now I can't justify going back again within a year's time. I'm thinking that I'll get the kids a Wii with the new Toy Story Mania for Christmas instead. I wouldn't have done both, so maybe they'll be just as happy playing a Disney game at home. :confused3
