Hi Everyone,

We are leaving Sat, 9/9 for a one week trip to DisneyWorld. Should we consider canceling our trip because of Hurricane Irma?

First, are you flying? Asking because depending on how Irma tracks, it is possible MCO will be closed on 9/9. If you are planning on driving, again, depending on how Irma tracks, you may find evacuation rules in place that either prevent you from getting to WDW or having to deal with huge traffic issues.

Second, if Ira tracks into Florida it is possible WDW may close.

Third, food stores and gas stations in Florida may or may not have supplies on 9/9, which unless you are staying on property could cause problems.

Bottom line: check the cancellation/re-booking policies on your reservations and be aware the Disney phone centers are getting swamped right now (people are saying it took them hours on hold before getting to an agent). Keep you eye on the forecasts, which unfortunately suggest we aren't going to know until Saturday whether Irma is going hit Florida.

Hi! We are flying out Saturday morning at 8 AM and staying at the Yacht Club. Our travel agent said that we will get hit with airline fees as well as possible Disney fees if WDW doesn't close the parks officially and we cancel anyway. I guess we will just have to wait and see what the storm does. My gut tells me to take the cancelation fees and stay safe. Time will tell. Thank you so much for responding to my question though...you had good things to think about.

No problem and hope you get to enjoy the Yacht Club (I stayed their once on a business trip, great place in particular if you have younger kids who can experience the sand bottomed pool ). There is another active DIS forum where people who also planned trips this week are dealing with the same challenges you are facing. The worst thing I can say about it is there is a lot of "wishful thinking" going on in it (Irma won't hit Florida, Orlando won't get anything but some rain, etc.) It's understandable but also sad to see some people so determined to save their vacation that they start engaging in denial.

Thank you! We do have children who will appreciate the sand bottom pool and water slide! I can appreciate their wishful thinking...but I also think reality is what it is and some things (like weather) cannot be controlled. Ha! I guess you are right...wait and see. It is definitely not worth it to risk our safety. Thanks for your advice...it was helpful.
